SummaryStephen King's "Misery"
Content
It's about a writer who gets in a car accident during a snow storm and his so-called '#1 fan' rescues him and demands him to write a book for her. The writer puts together all of the clues he finds along the way and figures out what she's really trying to do. It's a great movie to grab a bowl of popcorn and watch from beginning to end without any breaks.

SummaryMISERY LOVES COMPANY
Content
MISERY is one of the best Stephen King adaptations captured on film. Under the assured direction of Rob Reiner, the movie presents a chilling study of an obsessive...and deranged...fan. Kathy Bates won an Oscar for her impeccable portrayal of Annie Wilkes, author Paul Sheldon's "number one fan." She rescues him after he has an accident in a fierce blizzard and nurses him back to health (she's an ex-nurse). All goes well until Bates discovers that Sheldon has killed off her favorite character, the titular MISERY, and she goes bonkers and forces him to bring the character back. While Bates is certainly riveting, James Caan is remarkable as well in his role as the victimized author. It's a shame Oscar overlooked him for this role, as he is just as good as Ms. Bates, and gives a commanding performance. Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth and Frances Sternhagen are quite good in their small roles as well. MISERY is a suspenseful and witty thriller, and stands as one of King's best.

SummaryPure Fun & Suspense: Kathy Bates is Electrifying
Content
Set in a secluded town in the snow-capped mountains, James Caan and Kathy Bates battle wits as a popular romance novelist and his obsessed fan in this wonderful adaptation of Stephen King's novel. MISERY achieves everything it sets out to achieve, proving once again that Stephen King is a master of writing suspenseful, entertaining tales that both chill and delight. Rob Reiner transfers King's talent beautifully to the big screen and the film manages to pull-off its suspense without any real violence. Well...that is...almost without gruesome violence. Those who have seen the film already (or have only heard about it) will be familiar with the famous "hobbling" scene. But the success of the violence in this picture absolutely requires the non-violent suspense that saturates the rest of the film. In addition to nail-biting suspense, King has managed to write a writer into his story, giving the film a bit of autobiographical realism and intrigue.

What drives MISERY is the quality of its two main actors, James Caan and Kathy Bates. Caan is perfect as the tortured writer, but Kathy Bates takes the cake. Her performance as a psychopathic nurse, who is affected by dual personalities, is electrifying. One just never knows when she is going to snap and I found myself on the edge of my seat in every scene that she is in. The truly scary realization is that as the film progresses one begins to see that her "split" personalities are actually not split at all, but rather two sides of the same coin, each capable of horrific evil. In this vein, the "battle" between the smart writer and the dim-witted fan becomes much more interesting as we realize that Bates is not as dim-witted as we were initially led to believe. Because MISERY is primarily a film between two actors set in a single home (and primarily one room, at that), the audience becomes involved in the claustrophobia of Caan's situation and our feelings of helplessness only add to the tension the film creates. Finally, I couldn't help but make some subtle comparisons to DEATHTRAP, another film of mystery and suspense that centers on a writer in a secluded cabin who is forced to write for his life. While DEATHTRAP may keep you guessing, MISERY keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Overall, MISERY is pure entertainment and a pleasure to watch. Stephen King has delivered yet another classic to both literature and film and all of the elements are here to make it last. I highly recommend it if you like murder, mystery, and suspense.
