“Being in front of the camera means I get to do more of the fun stuff. It was hard at first. I hated watching myself trying to act natural. Day by day I am getting used to being followed by a camera. Sometimes I forget that all my goofiness is going to be seen by an audience.” Kari Byron

Kari Byron is an American television host and artist. She is famous for her stint on the Discovery Channel show “MythBuster,” which she holds from 2003 to present. She appeared in a four page spread in FHM magazine in June of 2006.

Currently, Byron lives with her husband Paul Urich and her daughter Stella Ruby in San Francisco, California. She is a vegetarian and is a big fan of scuba-diving. Byron admits she has been an atheist since childhood.

Childhood and Family:

Kari Elizabeth Byron was born on December 18, 1974, in California, to parents Dennis and Sue Byron. She has a younger sister named Summer Byron. Kari's nickname is Red, because of her red hair. She also is known with the nickname Kay.

After graduating from Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, California, Kari studied film and sculpture at San Francisco State University and later graduated Magna Cum Laude in May of 1998. After college, she spent a year  traveling around the world with a friend. Among places she visited during this period were Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Malaysia, Thailand, Tokyo, Nepal and India. She also took part in many art projects.

In March 2006, Kari married Paul Urich, an artist. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Stella Ruby, on June 28, 2009.

Beyond Tomorrow

After graduating from college, Kari Byron embarked on a career as an artist. She worked in painting and sculpturing and held exhibitions at some leading galleries in San Francisco. Thanks to her ability in sculpturing, Byron later ventured into the world of model-making and toy-prototyping. It was while working with Jamie Hyneman at M5 Industries that she got her first break with “MythBusters” team.

Byron is a co-host on “MythBusters,” a science entertainment television program created and produced by Australia's Beyond Television Productions for the Discovery Channel. Along with fellow co-hosts and “Build Team” members Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara, she worked  with Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman to test the plausibility of various myths. The show premiered on Discovery Channel on January 23, 2003 and later won the Young Artist Award for Social Relations of Knowledge Institute Award in 2006.

From 2005 to 2006, Byron appeared in the Australian documentary series “Beyond Tomorrow”.

Byron left “MythBusters” during the second half of the 2009 season for maternity reason. She was irregularly replaced by Jessi Combs. Also in 2009, “MythBusters” was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program. The show went on to receive the Emmy nomination for the same category in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

In 2010, Byron began starring on her own show on the Science Channel, titled “Head Rush.” Byron has also hosted “Large, Dangerous, Rocket Ships” (2010) and “Punkin Chunkin 2011” (2011) both for the Science Channel.

After the success of “MythBusters,” Byron still makes sculptures though she no longer show them in exhibitions.

“I do portraits or I make sculptures exploring my cynical view of contemporary issues. Artists that over-explain their art always take away from my experience as a viewer. I try to let my viewer make their own message. Art becomes more personal if you let yourself become involved. I will always explain my motivations and themes if someone asks but I prefer to hear theirs.” Kari Byron
