Childhood and Family:

The only child of Marie (née Paterson) and John Gillan, a singer and recording artist, Karen Sheila Gillan, who would later be popular as Karen Gillan, was born on November 28, 1987, in Inverness, Scotland. She started to study piano at age 7 and became interested in acting at an early age. While attending Charleston Academy, she participated in a number of productions. At age 16, Karen relocated to Edinburgh and took an HNC Acting and Performance course at Telford College. Two years later, she moved to London to attend the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts drama school, where she got a Bachelor of Arts in Acting.

Career:

Karen Gillan was discovered by a modeling agent while she was studying acting in London. She modeled in the launch party of Nicola Roberts' Dainty Doll Make-Up Range, which was shown in Roberts' episode of the documentary “The Passions of Girls Aloud” on April 4, 2008. Gillan, however, put acting as her priority.

Gillan made her television debut in an episode of “Rebus” called “Question of Blood” (2006), a role she got while still at Italia Conti. From 2008 to 2009, she became a part of the ensemble cast of the sketch comedy series “The Kevin Bishop Show,” during which time she portrayed various characters including celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Katie Perry. In 2008, she also played the role of Ginny Turner on the Channel 4 made for TV film “Stacked” and had a small part as a young girl in bus station on the British drama film “New Town Killers,” starring Dougray Scott, Alastair Mackenzie and James Anthony Pearson. She played Coll in several episodes of “The Well” in 2009.

“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.” Karen Gillan (on winning the role as Amy Pond in “Doctor Who”)

Previously making a guest appearance as Soothsayer in a 2008 episode called “The Fires of Pompeii,” Gillan returned to the BBC popular  science fiction television programme “Doctor Who” in 2010 when she was cast as Amy Pond, a companion of the series protagonist the Doctor, in his eleventh incarnation, played by Matt Smith. She won the TV Quick Award for Best Actress and the SFX Award for the same category both in 2011 for her performance on the series. She took home the National Television Award for Most Popular Female Drama Performance in the following year. She left the show in late 2012 and  later reprised the role in a cameo appearance in the 2013 Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor.”

Gillan had a notable supporting role as Ally in “Outcast” (2010), a British horror/thriller movie directed and co-written by Colm McCarthy, and played Jean Shrimpton in the TV film “We'll Take Manhattan” (2012). She also played Laura in the TV series “In Love with Coward” (2012) and reprised her role as Amy Pond on the TV miniseries “Pond Life” (2012).

In 2013, Gillan had a regular role as Daisy in the Adult Swim series “NTSF:SD:SUV” in its third season. She starred as a writer named Jane Lockhart on “Not Another Happy Ending” (2013), a British romantic comedy film directed by John McKay, and played Kaylie Russell in the American supernatural horror film “Oculus” (2013), opposite Brenton Thwaites, Rory Cochrane and Katee Sackhoff. The Mike Flanagan directed movie on September 8, 2013 at the Toronto International Film Festival and gained a wide theatrical release on April 11, 2014. Commenting about “Oculus,” she said, “I love horror films so much. I like being scared. I want to be in good films, obviously, rather than cheesy ones. And some horror films can be quite cheesy. I love watching them but I don't necessarily want to be in them.”

On stage, Gillan appeared on Broadway in a production called “ Time to Act” (2013), one of the plays included in “The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway” to benefit the non-profit Urban Arts Partnership.

Gillan played the role of  Nebula, an adopted daughter of Thanos who was raised with Gamora as siblings, on the superhero film “Guardians of the Galaxy,” featuring an ensemble cast that also includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro. Released on August 1, 2014, the film has been a critical and financial victory. Also in 2014, Gillan guest starred as Kerry Newblood in the series 3 of “A Touch of Cloth”.

Gillan will star as Eliza Dooley on the upcoming television situation comedy series “Selfie,” which is loosely based on “My Fair Lady,” set in the world of social media. It scheduled to debut on ABC on September 30, 2014.

Gillan has completed filming the role of Maeve MacDonough on the short film “Bound for Greatness” (2014), helmed by James Gadd. She will star opposite Jennifer Morrison and Julie Gonzalo on the upcoming comedy/romance film “The List” (2014). Besides, Gillan is set to play Ellen in the upcoming Western movie “In a Valley of Violence,” which is for December 4, 2015 release, and will star with Michael Sheen and Kit Harington in the TV film “Days in Hell” (2015).
