SummaryHUGE fan
Content
I want to start off by saying that I love this movie. I love the actor's in it, I love the beautiful hous, and I love the haunted-house genre. The fact that the scares are implied rather than blatant in-your-face shocks make this move better than most horror movies made today, even with the much smaller budget they obviously had. But not building it up TOO much, please watch this movie with an open mind and not expecting to see a Hollywoodised gore-fest.

And before I go, to Patricia who reviewed the movie and gave it one star, saying it was a "rip-off" of the Shining, I just wanted to say that this movie was made 4 years before the shining, and Stephen King said the original Burnt Offerings book by Robert Morasco was a huge influence on him when he WROTE the Shining. Read the review of Morasco's book on Amazon. Burnt Offerings may have it's flaws, but being a Rip-Off of the Shining, is not one of them.

let me start by sayin i love horror movies. i am generally very easy to please when it comes to them. But this film had nothing in it making it worthy of being made. First the story is stupid. something around the line of, a family rents a summer home. While they stay there they have to care for an elderly lady who they never end up seeing. Then in a rip off of the shining the father goes insane. Etc. Youve seen it before. I forced myself to watch till the end. And the end is one of the biggest let downs in movie history.
This is a terrible film

SummaryRETURN TO DARK SHADOWS
Content
Writer/director Dan Curtis burst into fame with his cult soap opera, DARK SHADOWS, and I must admit, I was one of DS greatest fans. I would rush home from school and/or work to catch the latest goings on in Collinsport. When the series died in 1971, Curtis went on to do other typical ventures, like this mildly eerie thriller. Karen Black and Oliver Reed (an odd pairing to say the least) star as a couple who rent a lavish summer house; why we're never really told. The house is currently managed by a strange brother and sister (the late Eileen Heckart and Burgess Meredith). Their son is played by Lee Montgomery, one of the early 80s child stars. The legendary Bette Davis has one of her most understated role as their Aunt Elizabeth who joins them in the house. It doesn't take too long to figure out that there is something definitely amiss in this house, including the mysterious old lady whom Black is required to take care of. The movie is aided by some interesting photographic moments and the deft score of Robert Cobert (DS music man) who has a strange fascination with music boxes, as evidenced in Josette's Musicbox and in this film as well. The movie has an unexpected tragic end, and a spooky touch as well. While BURNT OFFERINGS is not a great ghost story, it's an effective representation of Curtis' expertise.

I remember seeing this as a teenager in the theatre with my friend on a Saturday afternoon.Although the characters were all good {especially Karen Black}one could not help wondering why anyone would stay in a house that repairs itself.I know its only a movie but as far as haunted houses go come on!!! The hearse driver would be enough for me to start packing. The movie does throw some creepyness at you and the movie score will stay with you, even the final scene.Dan Curtis, who went on later to direct War&Rememberance series handles the camera well with great up close facial shots but not enough to make it rememberable. If you want a great haunted house movie watch The Changeling with George C.Scott and Trish Van Devere instead you'll be glad ya took my advice

SummaryEERIE, BUT IT HAS ITS FLAWS
Content
This movie is not bad, but it does have its flaws. The atmosphere is very creepy with hazy photography and quiet and serene settings. The music is wonderfully creepy. The acting is actually pretty believable and professional. The problems I found are the way the film tends to drag after a while and it does tend to avoid explaining certain situations as well. The film is very much worth the purchase because it doesn't rely on horrible special effects like most of today's horrific thrillers, but you may want to read the novel as well so you will be able to better understand what is going on in the film.
