| I have absolutly no idea how this film could possiblily have flopped. This film is 10/10 for so many reasons including script and roles.
Rock Hudson is so charming, and I consider this one of Julies best roles ever. Lili is smart, sexy yet vulnerable and yet irratic when it comes to love. Julie did a marvelous effort to portray Lili as she did and to get all those sides out - a spy who falls in love with conflicting interest. Julie really gets into the muddled mind of Lili, and as an audience you can feel that. Once again a side of Julies talent that she hadn't yet shown. Julie seems to somehow go just that little bit further, and it flys out of the screen. Quite possibliy it could be the influence of Blake combined with a few more years experience up her sleeve. Whatever the case, she is 100% infectious in this role.
On top of that, those marvelous musical numbers from the wonderful Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini, and with great naration of the film. It is brilliance!!!
The fact that Blake did have Julie in mind when writing this role is obvious at points. The inclusion of a musical act with its clear change from a sweet flowery song to ripping off the wholesome costume to reveal a provocative edge is more than likely a real life ploy. I love it that he and Julie can and do work together. He does see thru her and provide her with roles to do what others wouldn't consider "julie-ish", including this one.
The "Blake touch" is also wonderful. Sometimes all the war scenes can get a bit typical and therefore boring, but he brought out the comedy in them - very Clouseau.
I am so looking forward to this DVD release. I am so facinated by this film, I need special features!!!!

| Paramount Home Video had originally scheduled to release "Darling Lili" on DVD in April, but it was pulled from the release schedule with no explanation. Now they have just announced that the film will be released October 25, 2005!
As you probably know, this movie bombed when released in 1970, and it was never released on home video in any format. However, anything with Julie Andrews in it has a cult following, and I've always felt that it was just a matter of time before this film was finally made available.
Darling Lili is not a great movie by any means, but it's quite enjoyable with pretty music, nice cinematography, costumes, and set design. The story's not especially memorable, but Julie and Rock Hudson have good chemistry and give it their best shot. This was the sort of sophisticated, light comedy/drama that was popular in the Sixties and, if made just a few years earlier, would have starred either Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, or Shirley MacLaine. However, by the time of its release in 1970, this type of film had fallen on hard times--plus being a musical did not help its appeal at the box office.
Let's hope that Paramount decides to finally release the full-length version on DVD soon (as opposed to the shortened version that turns up occasionaly on cable) and gives us a beautiful transfer that is sharp, saturated, and free from debris. |

| What a treat this film is even today when it plays those rare times on t.v. Loved Mancini's music, julies singing at one of her best ever voicests. who does own the rights? one would think they would like to make a bit of cash by setting this film up for dvd release--those of us who have been able to tivo it would buy a proffesional dvd version in a heart beat..Julies things are rare and wonderful. |

| Every single week I'v been searching on the internet for a movie titled Darling Lili on DVD - unsuccessfully needlesss to say as it's not yet been produced. I saw this dazzling Julie Andrews-movie once and constantly thereafter been longing for a second time around.It had it all, nice plot, good music, star-quality actors and what more do you want? Although the movie wasn't really a box-office hit at that time I'm apsolutely positive the film-audience today will be of a more enthusiastic kind.In those days there was no market for that sort of extravaganza people just love today.
So, bring us the movie right now. |
