No Air

Background:

“I was standing on the stage and I was doing it. I was actually doing what I said I wanted to do.” Jordin Sparks

Rising to fame as the “American Idol” winner from season six, Jordin Sparks released her platinum self-titled debut album in 2007. The eponymous album yielded the top 20 singles "This Is My Now," "Tattoo," "No Air" (featuring Chris Brown), and "One Step at a Time." The song "No Air" later earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2008.

"Simon, because he’s brutally honest and thinks I’m 'sweet.’" Jordin Sparks (when asked who her favorite “American Idol” judge was)

Jo Jo,

Childhood and Family:

“Amazingly, I never felt singled-out. Even at school, we were always treated with respect, never out of the ordinary, which when I look back, is really an incredible thing. I try to be that accepting whenever I encounter a new or difficult situation.” Jordin Sparks (about being bi-racial)

The daughter of Phillippi Sparks, an African-American who is a former left corner back for the Dallas Cowboys and former defensive back for the New York Giants, and Jodi Weidmann-Sparks (Caucasian-American), Jordin Brianna Sparks was born on December 22, 1989, in Phoenix, Arizona. She has a younger brother named PJ (Phillippi Sparks, Jr.), who also plays football.

Jordin Sparks, nicknamed “Jo Jo” and “Jordin Speezy,” attended Orchard Elementary School and Northwest Community Christian School in Phoenix, Arizona, through the eighth grade. She then studied at Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Glendale, Arizona, but only for her freshman year. She was subsequently been home-schooled so she could give more attention to her singing.

An evangelical Christian who attends Calvary Community Church in Phoenix, Arizona, Sparks wears a purity ring that symbolizes her desire to remain a virgin until marriage.

"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody - guy or girl - wants to be a slut." Jordin Sparks

American Idol

Career:

Taking singing lessons by age fourteen from vocal coach Melissa Black, Jordin Sparks, whose musical inspirations include Mariah Carey, Beyoncé Knowles, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Hanson, rigorously trained with her coach for almost a year before participating in various singing competitions, including Sprite Rising Star, Gospel Music Association GMA Academy, The Proof Is In The Pudding Contest, NBC/PAX America's Most Talented Kids, Colgate Country Showdown and the 2007 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search. In 2006, she became a Torrid plus-size model and was featured on a full-page ad for the company in the December 2006 issue of Seventeen magazine. Also that year, she auditioned for the sixth season of FOX’s talent show "American Idol" in Seattle, WA. While on the show, Sparks gained a loyal fan base known as "Sparkplugs" and was never voted into the bottom three. She was eventually crowned the winner of the sixth season of "American Idol" on May 23, 2007, after beating runner-up Blake Lewis. She was only 17 at the time.

"Jordin was the most improved over the whole season. Didn't start the best, but midway through this was the girl who suddenly got momentum." ("American Idol" judge Simon Cowell)

After her win, Sparks appeared on “Live With Regis and Kelly,” “The Today Show,” “The View,” and “Larry King Live.” She was also featured in such publications as Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide, and Glamour.

“I learned so much being out there every night singing live; how to grab hold of a song, to have and keep that control. I've always been a student of singing, listening to stuff on the radio and trying to figure out how a singer is 'breathing,' how they do harmonies. What was great about performing live every night is building the strength in my voice and seeing it resonate with the audience. I tried to bring that into my sessions for the album; giving that kind of power to the material.” Jordin Sparks

On November 20, 2007, Sparks released her self-titled major-label debut album. It spawned four top 20 singles: "This Is My Now," "Tattoo," "No Air" (featuring Chris Brown), and "One Step at a Time." The song "No Air" earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals while the eponymous debut album was certified platinum in the U.S. on December 12th, 2008.

"I'm so excited, I can't find the words." Jordin Sparks (on being nominated for a Grammy)

In February 2008, Sparks sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLII. She went on to become the opening act on the Alicia Keys' “As I Am” tour. She also returned to the "American Idol" stage during its seventh season, singing a duet with Chris Brown on the “Idol Gives Back” results’ show and in the finale of “American Idol” on May 21, 2008.
