 | ...or in English: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
This remains one of my favorite films, for many different reasons. The classic, gloriously performed music, the exuberant acting, the wonderful design work. Twyla Tharp's extraordinary choreography, which set her loose/tight, loony/natural, synchopated, counterpointy movement style in what has to be the PERFECT setting. Several wonderful film debuts by singers like Don Dacus, Annie Golden, Nell Carter. And seeing incredibly good actors showing off surprising musical talents as well; who knew Treat Williams and John Savage had such beautiful singing voices?
Another thing I've always loved about this film is the critically underrated cleverness of the screenwriters, who took what was an absolutely unfilmable play and gave it a plot, characters with real depth, pathos, celebration and social commentary that matched the original in all its scattered, hare-brained glory, and tied it all up in a package that worked so well. By making Claude a country boy on his first day in New York (on his way to near certain death in Vietnam), he gives us as the audience a way into the tight-knit, addled, insular world of the hippie kids who seem so smug and disdainful to outsiders, and yet are so young, inexperienced and bewildered by what they see as the strange cruelty of the path Claude has been set on by his beliefs. They're no longer a strange tribe for us to either envy or scratch our head over - now they're a band of youngsters trying their hardest to stay alive and happy in a world that seems bent on killing them, their souls, their hearts.
And that brings me to the point of my particular review here. To wit: that this story has lost none of its timeliness. In fact, it now has a whole new resonance given the events of the past few years, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful, heartfelt, tragic tale told with great sympathy for anyone facing the horror of war, and the prospect of either himself or a loved one at risk of dying for reasons one cannot understand or agree with.
It's intense, angry, horrified; it is also sweet, happy, sexy, celebratory. It's all of life rolled up in one big songfest. Hop on board and sing slong!
*wanders off singing "I got life, mother! I got laughs, sister! I got freedom, brother! I got good times, man..." |

 | Unlike GREASE which came out shortly before this (and hey, don't get me wrong. I love GREASE!), HAIR is less campy and "bubble gum". It has a darker, more edge flavor as it reflects on the turmoil of the Vietnam war and the hippie movement of the 60's. That being the case, those of us who generally don't like musicals (like me!) can appreciate the rock and folk style of the music and choreography of the dances.
It's also cool to go back and watch Treat Williams in this, especially after seeing such a hardcore performance in PRINCE OF THE CITY. |

 | 'HAIR' is probably one of the most amazing movies I have seen, I enjoyed every minute of it! It is fun, energetic, and the end is just amazing! I recomend this movie to everyone. There are so many hidden meanings, but the film doesn't try and stick them right in your face. |

 | I only watched this movie because I heard the main song from it, and was extremely curious how that could be a movie. So I went to my local video store to rent it, but they didn't have it. So I special ordered it. I can only say the movie is worth much more than what I payed. First off, the music is brilliant. The movie also seems to poke fun at certain stereotypes. It really is a classic. |

 | The 60s, the hippies, the anti-war passion, the Vietnam War .... was it a lost generation of the youth? Or, was it the idealism, the cry against the establishment?
Today, there are many other types of wars, atrocities, claims of injustices, ... we don't have similar hippies movement! Is it a new generation who knows what she wants? Or, is it we have too many pre-occupation of greater things for the future ; the internet revolution, with information and knoweledge, promising and exciting technologies, SMS, MP3 ....
