 | romero ended his zombie idea in a very bad way in my opinion. the film is given a different direction from the start, this film is not about people trying to survive zombies. it is about life after a new sivilization is built around a city in canada. the only redeming value is the simon and dennis hopper, as the best crazy bad guy in my view. romero evolves the zombies, which is fine, i like the idea. i wished romero kept in mind that they are living on DEAD BRAIN TISSUE. how smart can they possibly be? again, i like that they get smart, but the ending was ridiculuous *SPOILER* IT ENDS WITH THE ZOMBIES GETTING REVENGE AND MOVING ON TO SOMEWHERE ELSE. AS TO CIVILIZE SOMEWHERE ELSE? WHAT THE H*LL IS WITH THAT? THEY ARE DDEEAADD. *SPOILER OVER* i expected a war between the living and the dead for Earth, but then got Very leary when i learned the film was only 93 minutes in length. how are you suppose to finish off a huge storyline like the living versus the dead (thast what the first three films were about. correct me if wrong, but they did not seem to get along too well) in 93 minutes? i liked dawn of the dead the best, possibily because it had so much meat to it. land of the dead was a joke as far as im concerned. romero made three great films before, i wished he didnt screw it up with this one. the storyline was fine, but the ending made complete cap. it made the living look weaker than the dead. i dont know if it was a statement about humans, or if it poor and lazy writing. this film had none of the edge the other three had. as far as the gore goes, it's a zombie film, and its romero, a person who would rather an NC-17 for violence and gore than an R and get more of an audience. Personally, i respect that. he released his film in the way he saw it. i admire that.
but the acting and direction was bad, romero really isnt one of the best directors. his writing is what has gotten him so far. but in short, a TRUE disappointment from romero. i expected much better. i would say im sorry for going into a theater with expectations, but im not sorry. i have expecations of films. its unfortunate that hollywood doesnt anymore. thats why the industry is at an all time low, it releases nothing but crap. out of the past 5 years, i may have seen 14 good movies. thats worse than pathetic. as a filmmaker myself, im a bit embarrassed to watch such crap in the theater today. hollywood needs to get its act together, and understand that just anything wont fly.
romero was one of the great older filmmakers. its a real shame he went hollywood with this film. if you see it, youll know what i mean. |

 | I saw 'Land of the Dead' completely out-of-order from the other Romero zombie movies, having seen Day of the Dead first, then Land of the Dead', and then Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead. However, that said, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the movie. As a zombie movie, it's great fun. There's plenty of zombie screen-time and gore aplenty, and the acting really wasn't half-bad. The actors put up performances that well exceeded what I had expected, and the plot was pretty solid. Dennis Hopper plays the villainous Kaufman very well, and Riley was really a pretty likeable character.
There were a few things I wish had been done differently (such as how the big-money vehicle, Dead Reckoning, was used), and I'd have liked to see some more of the downfall of the human city, but for the most part I got exactly what I wanted: zombies messing stuff up. The gore actually wasn't as gratuitous as I was expecting, and frankly, that was a good thing - it made sense when it was used (I mean, it's a movie about zombies ripping people apart and eating them), but it wasn't distracting or really over-the-top.
While Land of the Dead isn't my favorite zombie movie (that honor goes to the 'Dawn of the Dead' remake), it's still very well worth your time, and I'm looking forward to buying it on DVD when it comes out. |

 | One of the greats has come back to make a GREAT movie. I loved it. i cant wait till it hits the shelves at the movie store. the zombies look awesome, the actors are perfect, and the story is a nice tie-in to the previous films by the MASTER of the genre. |

 | In this movie we once again have a horde of Zombies who have developed "intelligence" or something akin to this. This was George A. Romero's first mistake. I don't know about you but when I go to see a zombie movie I expect them to be brain dead and eating living human flesh. Even "Shaun Of The Dead " realized this. So now you have "smart zombies' who organize an uprising against the Upper Classes. I seem to recall reading about something like that in one of my Sociology Classes at College. It seems that Romero wanted to make a movie which included "Social Satire And Commentary" but all he has done is put too much plot in the way of a (potentially) good Horror movie.Watching this movie made me wonder if Romero has been reading too much Karl Marx? Just a thought. As the man once said 'If you want to make entertainment spend 20 million bucks. If you want to send a "Message" go to Western Union". I give this movie 5 stars because somehow Mr. Romero has managed to live off his reputation alone for the past 30 years. |

 | I'm a really entusiastic fan of George Romero, I love his movies since... I can't even remember when this all begun to me, the problem is, I am used to see him as an outsider of what hollywood stands for, his movies were explicit disturbing and strong, something I never seen anywhere else, and, well, it's really painful to admit, but I think he gave himself to the industry, at least in this "Land". The movie is not bad, and being a fan I only can be suportive, but there is something wrong about it, it looks like a regular hollywood movie, and this was not what I was expecting, don't get me wrong, it's far superior than most part of movies out there, but still lacks some raw cruelty that the other zombie movies have, specially in the end. I hope the dvd version could be more like a Romero movie, I hope so. |
