 | Let's quickly cut to the chase here. Jessica Simpson can't sing, she can't dance and she most definitely can't act! So how stupid is America to get sucked into this one? THE DUKES OF HAZZARD generally falls flat. One star for Willie Nelson.Hopefully, as it should, this movie signals the end of Jessica Simpson's acting career, at least, and here singing career at most!

 | The "Dukes of Hazzard" is a fast- paced film based on the hit television series than ran from 1979 to 1985. This movie brings the Duke boys, Uncle Jesse, Daisy Duke, Rosco P. Coltraine, Enos, Boss Hogg, Cooter, and the rest of the gang back for another run, this time on the big screen.
This movie's plot is similar to what we all remember from the television show: Boss Hogg and Cletus planting evidence in an effort to trap the Dukes for their own personal gain. This time around, they are trying to seize the Duke family farm and other family properties in the area to construct a mine. Bo and Luke have to do whatever they can to stop the crooked law enforcement duo of Rosco and Boss Hogg in order to save their home.
Aside from the basic plot, there is little in this movie that resembles the television show. Bo and Luke Duke are played by Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville respectively. This time around, the two Duke boys are portrayed as cousins who are hormone- raged and not all that bright. They aren't much like John Schneider and Tom Wopat, but they still manage to be likeable enough to earn a passing grade.
Boss Hogg is played by Burt Reynolds and he is absolutely nothing like the Boss Hogg of old. He doesn't look anything like Sorrell Booke and his character is completely serious, in sharp contrast to the corrupt but often humorous Boss Hogg from the television show. Rosco is the same way- his character in this movie is far too serious, a huge departure from the goofy, bumbling sheriff played by actor James Best on TV. The Enos character is probably the only one in the movie who seems similar to the character from the television show.
Daisy Duke and Uncle Jesse round out the set of performers. Jessica Simpson takes on the role as Daisy Duke and she is actually a little better than I expected her to be. She doesn't compare to Catherine Bach, but for an amateur actress, she isn't half bad. And by far the weakest link in this cast is Willie Nelson as Uncle Jesse. Not only does Nelson lack the acting ability to fill the shoes of actor Denver Pyle, his character is flat and boring, with only a few lines in the entire movie. He is nothing like the patriarch figure we would expect for this role.
Even though this movie is essentially flawed in its some of its casting and acting, I still think it is deserving of a small recommendation. The reason I still managed to enjoy my viewing is because of the non- stop action throughout this film. There is never a dull moment, with plenty of fighting scenes, car chases, explosions, and other assorted mayhem. Fans of the old television series will not appreciate some of the characters and will instantly start to compare the movie to the show, much like I did. It's certainly not a perfect match, but there is enough fun and high -speed action to make this film worth watching.

 | The dukes of hazzard is a movie that gleefully enjoys it's self and is simply meant as summer fun. It's rolls through yeehaws, drag races, and has a plot shorter than Daisy's shorts. Basically the Duke boys cousins Luke and Bo (played by Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott) raise hell in hazzard county with the help of their well-endowed cousin Daisy (A truly awful Jessica Simpson)and their bright orange Charger General Lee. But when Boss Hogg ( Burt Reynolds)a crooked politician hatches a plan to mine the hazzard area for coal the boys set out to stop him. From there on the plot kind of fades into oblivion and is replaced with car chases, things blowing up, daisy in short shorts and a bikini and Uncle Jesse's(Fantastic Willie Nelson) awful jokes. So if you have a little hick in you or you're a fan of the orginal series you might want to check it out. You'll probably enjoy it. And if not Johnny Knoxville's ass looks fantastic in those worn out Levis. |

 | So maybe it was because I was a little tipsy when I saw this movie or maybe it was the movie itself, or possibly a combination of all the above. But, Dukes of Hazzard did not hold my attention very well. Sure, there were the requisite car chases, the shots of Daisy Duke flaunting her assets and some hillbilly fun. But, that's all there is.
I haven't ever watched the Dukes of Hazzard tv series. My friends who went with me did and thought the movie was really funny. I'm not sure how faithful it is, except that apparently the doors of General Lee are supposed to be welded shut so when they opened at the beginning of the movie, my entire row, hell the entire theatre it seemed booed angrily. Then clapped later when they realized why it was that way.
Of course the police are vilified as they are working for the evil Boss Hogg and shot at with flaming arrows, their cars exploding. And I'm wondering, why are we blowing up police cars? Normally, when a police car blows up it belongs to the good side. But its all done in good fun, right? A couple jokes were seriously out of place with the rest of the movie. For instance, there is an homage to that 1995 great film The Usual Suspects which only myself and maybe one other person laughed at. The rest of the theatre was deathly quiet.
I just personally didn't find it too funny. Its not as if they weren't trying. Sean William Scott and Johnny Knoxville all try to give some life to the movie but honestly it didn't click very well. I'm not sure if its because of the source material or just a shoddy job of translating it to the screen. The biggest problem, I think, is that it felt like a TV episode not a movie. And that is a huge problem. You can't make a feature length TV show, add some stars and a movie make it. It doesn't work that way. In the end, only the credits and the outtakes playing through them were truly funny.
But then again I probably wasn't the demographic the movie industry was shooting for. I say this because, even among my friends, everyone was laughing (except for the Usual Suspects joke) but me. Laughing and clapping. When Willie Nelson shot off his, to me, horrible jokes people laughed. When that horn song came, people clapped. With that in mind, I don't know what else to say about this film. It didn't do it for me but, in my theatre at least, I seemed to be in the minority. |
