 | I bought this version instead of the deluxe version because it is alot cheaper plus has most of the features that are on the deluxe version. Beside that, I grew up watching this movie as a kid and always loved it. It was one of those movies that has everything. Comedy, drama, and a little intensitity. Based on the novella The Body by Stephen King, which showed that King could entertain us without horror. The actors are amazing in their roles. Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix (R.I.P.), Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell bring four friends to life and I really thought they were friends in the film. The scenes between Phoenix and Wheaton are exceptionally good. Kiefer Sutherland is amazingly convincing in his role as the leader of a gang of bullies who always torment the four boys. Also making small appearances are John Cusak and Richard Dreyfuss as the adult version of Wheaton's character and nararates the tale. Directed by Rob Reiner, this film will always be a classic in my eyes. Highly Highly Recommended. |

 | STAND BY ME is a coming-of-age story. And it is an enjoyable hour and a half. But, unfortunately, the screenplay is so episodic that the 'coming-of-age' part is not gradual. It's instantaneous. Much of the dialogue is extremely clever and enrolling as the four boys discuss PEZ, Goofy and the groin attacking dog. But, the dialogue is also inappropriately vulgar, showing children of the eighties, not the fifties. The story is narrated by Richard Dreyfuss who only occasionally seems prepared. Some times it sounds like a 'cold read' and his whole appearance in the film smells like an afterthought. Not Reiner's best work nor his worst. The DVD, however has a great 36 minute documentary featuring many of the performers looking back 17 years to the production. That features a nice memorial to River Phoenix (who practically walks away with the film) who died several years after the film was made. The DVD also has another nostalgic commentary by Reiner. |

 | I purchased the Special Edition of this movie recently and couldn't believe that the audio was monophonic. I was thus pleasantly surprised to see that in this edition of the DVD they restored the original multi-channel soundtrack. Even the casual listener will notice the difference immediately.
To my knowledge the movie itself is the same as on the Special Edition (no added or cut scenes) so I won't waste your time commenting on that. I just wanted to bring attention to the fact that the Deluxe Edition of this movie is the ONLY one any serious movie collector should consider. |

 | Stand by me is by far, the greatest coming of age movie ever made. The story is based on Stephen King's short story called The Body. Stand by me starts off as four friends who were hanging in their treehouse and decided to search for a dead body. They wanted to be famous and have their faces on the newspapers if they found Ray Brower's body. Gordy played by Wil Wheaton was boy who had potential to be a successful writer. His older brother Denny played by John Cusack (Better Off Dead, The Sure Thing, Say Anything) died in a car accident. His father was always in favor of Denny and always ignored Gordy. Chris, played by River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho, Sneakers) was a troubled boy from a bad family. Teddy played by Corey Feldman (The Goonies, Lost Boys) was a flamboyant, hot headed boy that had a crazy father who put his ear on a stove. And Vern played by Jerry O'Connell (Jerry McGuire, Joe's Apartment) was a chubby kid who heard from his brother and friend that there was a dead body hidden near the train tracks. The boys went on a journey to find the dead body until Ace played by Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys, Young Guns) and his gang were gonna find the body too. When they found the dead body, neither gang got the credit. This movie contains friendship, heart, and a chemistry between all four boys who laughed and cried together. This DVD comes with a booklet and a remastered soundtrack of the movie. I would recommend this classic 80's movie to all ages. |
