Step Up

"People shouldn’t be ashamed of their bodies, especially women." Jenna Dewan

Dancer Jenna Dewan, who has worked with such artists as P. Diddy, Janet Jackson, Ricky Martin, Justin Timberlake, 'N Sync, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Pink, and Missy Elliott, began acting in 2002 with a small role in the comedy film "The Hot Chick." After several TV appearances, which included being seen on the TV series "Quintuplets," "The Young and the Restless," and "Joey," she landed her first starring role in the horror film "Tamara" (2005) and has since played significant roles in such films as "Take the Lead" (2006) and "The Grudge 2" (2006). Dewan also received notice in 2006 for her starring role opposite Channing Tatum in the romantic dance film "Step Up." She will next be seen in the upcoming films "Shine On," "The Six Wives of Henry Lefay," and "Virgin on Bourbon Street."

On a more personal note, this 5' 3" brown-haired, green-eyed half-Lebanese beauty has been engaged to her "Step Up" (2006) co-star actor Channing Tatum since 2006.

Half Lebanese

Childhood and Family:

On December 3, 1980, Jenna Lee Dewan was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to parents Darryll Dewan, a starting running back for the 1972 Notre Dame Football Team, and Nancy Lee Bursch Smith. After her parents split up, Dewan spent her formative years in Dallas, Texas. Her mother later married Claude Brooks Smith.

Dewan, who is half-Lebanese, is a graduate of Grapevine High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader and won several dance competitions. She graduated in 1999 and was voted prom queen her senior year. She has also attended the University of Southern California and was a member of Pi Beta Phi.

In August 2006, she became engaged to actor, model, and producer Channing Tatum, her “Step Up” (2006) co-star. They own a dog named Meeka.

Take the Lead

“It was amazing. I started dance when I was five years old and danced pretty much throughout my life. Then at age sixteen, an agent, a dance agent from LA actually, found me and asked if I went to LA if he could represent me. I said sure. So, right at eighteen I moved to LA and started auditioning. I went to college as well. I went to USC. I was auditioning dance-wise and just started booking work. Booked the Janet Jackson tour and was gone… And that was where my life took me in the beginning.” Jenna Dewan

Discovering a love for dancing at age five, Jenna Dewan started auditioning for music videos, where she was discovered by a dance agent. She subsequently toured alongside Janet Jackson and Ricky Martin and worked as a dancer in both live performances and music videos for such artists as Justin Timberlake, 'N Sync, P. Diddy, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Pink, Missy Elliott, Billy Crawford, Sean Paul, Ciara, and Mandy Moore.

She branched out to acting and landed her first film role in the Tom Brady-directed comedy film starring Rob Schneider, "The Hot Chick" (2002). She then appeared in the Halloween themed TV movie "Dark Shadows" (2004) and was spotted as a guest on FOX’s sitcom "Quintuplets," CBS’ Emmy Award-winning soap opera "The Young and the Restless," and NBC’s sitcom starring Matt LeBlanc, "Joey."

In 2005, Dewan appeared in the award winning independent film by Indian American film maker Ben Rekhi, "Waterborne," alongside Christopher Masterson, and landed her first starring role in the horror film "Tamara," playing the title role of an unpopular girl in school who returns from the dead. About the movie, she revealed, “My agent sent it to me for an audition. I read it and I loved the fact that to play Tamara you had to play two different characters. Not only two different characters, but completely different sides of the spectrum – the poor, picked on, unattractive girl and the vixen, the revenge-filled powerful woman. I knew it would be a challenge and I was really excited. And I always kind of wanted to do a horror movie, so I was excited about that. I really like the character of Tamara.”

Afterward, Dewan was cast as Sasha in the dance drama "Take the Lead" (2006; starring Antonio Banderas, Rob Brown, and Alfre Woodard) and Sally in "The Grudge 2" (2006; with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Tamblyn, and Arielle Kebbel), which was the sequel to the 2004 American horror film remake "The Grudge." She also received notice for her starring role opposite future fiancé Channing Tatum in the hit romantic dance film "Step Up" (2006), which won her a Teen Choice Award.

Recently, in 2008, Dewan co-starred with Josh Henderson and Tom Arnold in Scott S. Anderson's comedy film "The Jerk Theory," playing Henderson's love interest Molly. She also appeared in the straight-to-video released thriller "Love Lies Bleeding” and co-starred with Tatum O'Neal and Ashley Benson in the biographical drama TV movie "Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal."

Dewan has completed her latest film project, "Shine On," a romantic thriller in which she plays the lead role. She will soon wrap up "The Six Wives of Henry Lefay," an indie comedy film starring Elisha Cuthbert and Tim Allen, and "Virgin on Bourbon Street," a comedy in which she stars opposite Rob Schneider.

“I'm about 50/50 when it comes to technology. I can check my email and search for stuff, but if I hear we're on this and this and this site, then I need an exact link to get there otherwise I'm going to get lost.” Jenna Dewan
