Background:

Los Angeles based journalist Jann Carl is perhaps best known as a correspondent for the No. 1 magazine in syndication, “Entertainment Tonight,” a gig she held from 1995 to 2008. She also has co-hosted “Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon” for a number of years. Prior to joining “ET” in 1995, Carl worked for WLS-TV, Chicago; KABC-TV, Los Angeles; and KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, among other stations.

Carl and her husband David Sears have two children together.

Childhood and Family:

Jann Carl was born on May 19, 1960, in Carthage, Missouri. She graduated from Moline (Illinois) High School in 1978 and then went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1982.

Jann is married to cable television sales executive David Sears. They have one son, Matthew, and one daughter, Katherine.

Career:

After completing college, Jann Carl worked as a reporter for WLS-TV in Chicago from 1983 to 1984. While living in Chicago, she also anchored the local news breaks during “Good Morning America.” From 1984 to 1987, she served as a host and reporter on the KABC-TV magazine show “Eye on L.A.” After leaving KABC-TV, Carl joined KTLA-TV in 1987, and became a co-anchor of Los Angeles' No. 1 rated show, “News at Ten.”

Carl's big break arrived when she joined “Entertainment Tonight” as a correspondent in December 1995. She was promoted to weekend anchor and substitute anchor in 1999. She remained with the show until 2008. Her duties in “ET” included reporting general entertainment news, conducting celebrity interviews, attending movie premieres and other industry events, as well as making on-set visits to feature films and television series.

Carl has become a co-host of “Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon” since 1998.

Apart from journalism, Carl has made appearances in several television and film projects. She appeared as TV announcer on the comedy film “Big Man on Campus” (1989), directed by Jeremy Kagan and starring Allan Katz, Corey Parker and Cindy Williams, as a newscaster in Albert Pyun's “Captain America” (1990), starring Matt Salinger, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty, and as field reporter on the David Price horror film “Son of Darkness: To Die for II” (1991). On the small screen, Carl was featured in the miniseries “Seduced by Madness: The Diane Borchardt Story” (1996), the series “Diagnosis Murder” (1997) and the made for TV film “ Oscar Countdown 2006.” In 2009, she appeared as Jann Starl in three episodes of “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!.”
