American actor Jake Abel is familiar to moviegoers thanks to his
portrayals of Luke Castellan in the film adaption of “Percy
Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” (2010) and Mark
James in the film version of of “I Am Number Four” (2011).
He has acted in other films like “Tru Loved” (2008),
“Flash of Genius” (2008) and “The Lovely Bones”
(2009) and in several television series like “Threshold,”
“ER” and “Supernatural,” to name a
few.
Apart from acting, Abel enjoys writing, photography, and music and film
editing. His favorite TV shows include “Project Greenlight”
and “Family Guy.” He is friends with fellow actor Kyle
Gallner. Abel has two dogs named Cooper and Maya. A Ohio native, Abel
becomes a fan of the NFL team Cleveland Browns and the NBA team
Cleveland Cavaliers.

Childhood and Family:
Jacob Allen Abel, who would later be popular as Jack Abel, was born on
November 18, 1987, in Canton, Ohio. He has a brother named Shaun. He
started his professional acting career at his late teens.
I Am Number Four
Career:
Jake Abel made his television acting debut as Spencer in the Disney
Channel Original Movie “Go Figure” (2005), directed by
Francine McDougall and written by Patrick J. Clifton and Beth Rigazio.
The comedy/drama film starred Jordan Hinson, Whitney Sloan and Cristine
Rose. He then had a recurring role as Brian Janklow in the short lived
science fiction series “ Threshold” (CBS, 2005), starring
Carla Gugino and Brian Van Holt. He went on take on guest spots in
“The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” (2006, as Kirk),
“Cold Case” (2006, as Doug Sommer) and “CSI:
Miami” (2007, as Charlie Sheridan).
Abel's first venture into the big screen was in “Strange
Wilderness” (2008), a comedy/adventure film produced by Adam
Sandler's production company, Happy Madison Productions for Paramount
Pictures. There he was featured as a conservationist. Starring Steve
Zahn, Allen Covert, Justin Long, Kevin Heffernan, and Jonah Hill and
helmed by Fred Wolf, “Strange Wilderness” received largely
negative reviews from critics and was not a box office success. The
actor quickly followed it up with a major role as Trevor, Tru's
gay-rights supporter, hipster-geek boyfriend, on the independent film
“Tru Loved” (2008), by writer/director Stewart Wade. The
film earned 14 awards at six different film festivals before going into
limited national release on October 17, 2008.
Still in 2008, Abel was cast as Dennis (21 years) in Marc Abraham's
directed biographical movie “Flash of Genius,” starring top
names Greg Kinnear, Lauren Graham, Dermot Mulroney and Alan Alda. It
premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7,
2008. Additionally, he starred as Jake in a two minute short called
“Kickstand,” by Pascal Cooper, and made a guest appearance
in NBC's “Life,” playing Tate.
In 2009, Abel jointed the cast of The CW hit series
“Supernatural” in the recurring role of the 19-year old
Adam Milligan. He also appeared in episodes of other popular series
“CSI: NY” and “ER” (both 2009), playing Kyle
Sheridan and Dylan, respectively. On the film front, Abel played Brian
Nelson in the film adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” (2009),
directed by Peter Jackson, and co-starred with Zoe Bell and Vail Bloom
in Ed Brubaker's “Angel of Death” (2009). He also appeared
in the short film “18” (2009), by Joy Gohring.
Abel's career gained significant boost when he landed the role of Luke
Catellan, the demigod son of Hermes, on the fantasy/adventure film
“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”
(2010), loosely based on “The Lightning Thief,” the first
novel in the “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” series by
Rick Riordan. Released on February 2010, the film grossed $226,497,209
worldwide against a budget of $95 million. Under the direction of Chris
Columbus, Abel was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight and
a Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie: Fight, both he shared with Logan
Lerman.
In 2011, Abel was cast as Sarah Hart (played by Dianna Agron)'s former
boyfriend, football player Mark James, on the teen action/science
fiction movie “I Am Number Four,” directed by D. J. Caruso.
The film made $55,100,437 at the North American box office and an
estimated $90,882,360 overseas for a worldwide total of $145,982,79.
Though showing good reception from audiences, it received mostly
negative reviews from critics. Abel reunited with director D.J. Caruso
for a social film thriller titled “Inside” (2011), where he
co-starred with Emmy Rossum and Molly Hagan. The year also found him
appearing as Tyler Moser in an episode of “Grey's Anatomy”
called “Poker Face.”
Abel is set to portray Ian O'Shea in the upcoming film adaptation of
“The Host,” directed and scripted by Andrew Niccol. It is
scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 29, 2013. He will reprise
the role of Luke on the upcoming sequel “Percy Jackson: Sea of
Monsters,” which is scheduled for an August 16, 2013 release.
