The Pursuit of Happyness
Child actor Jaden Smith, the scion of Hollywood A-list couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, made his acting debut at around 5 in the sitcom created by his parents, "All of Us." He then made his film debut alongside his father in the biographical "The Pursuit of Happyness" (2006) and received multiple awards for his role as Christopher Gardner Jr., the son of the on-and-off-homeless salesman-turned-stockbroker Chris Gardner.
After guest-starring in an episode of "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody," he returned to the big screen to play Jennifer Connelly's stepson Jacob in a remake of the 1951 science fiction film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (2008). He will next be seen alongside Jackie Chan in an upcoming remake of the "Karate Kid" film.
Childhood and Family:
Son of Hollywood A-list couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was born on July 8, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. He has one younger sister, Willow Smith (born on October 31, 2000), who made her acting debut in "I Am Legend" alongside their father Will and stars in the 2008 film "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl." Jaden also has one older half-brother, Trey Smith (born on November 11, 1992), who attends Oaks Christian High School and plays as wide receiver for their junior varsity football team. Trey is the son of Will Smith and his first wife Sheree Zampino.
Born to family of actors, Jaden Smith followed his parents' footsteps and began appearing on television at age 5, playing Reggie (2003-2004), on the now-defunct UPN African-American sitcom created by his parents, "All of Us." At age 8, he made his film debut alongside his father Will, playing his on-screen son Christopher Gardner Jr. in director Gabriele Muccino's biographical film about the smart salesman and family man Chris Gardner (portrayed by Will Smith), "The Pursuit of Happyness" (2006).
Jaden's performance in his first film received positive reviews, winning him an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance, a Teen Choice for Choice Movie: Chemistry (shares with Will Smith), and a Phoenix Film Critics Society (PFCS) Award for Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role – Male. He was also nominated a Black Reel Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Young Actor, an Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, and a Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie: Breakout Male. His father Will also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the film.
Meanwhile, Jaden presented the awards for the Best Animated Short and the Best Live Action Short with acting nominee Abigail Breslin at the 79th Academy Awards. He also could be seen in Alicia Keys' single video for the Grammy-winning song “Superwoman” (2007) along with his mother Jada Pinkett.
In April 2008, Jaden was spotted as a guest in an episode of Disney Channel's sitcom starring Dylan and Cole Sprouse, "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody." Also in that year, he co-starred as Jacob, the stepson of Jennifer Connelly's character, in Scott Derrickson's science fiction film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a loose remake of the 1951 film of the same name.
Next, Jaden is scheduled to play a role in an upcoming film remake of "Karate Kid" along with Jackie Chan as his mentor. His father Will is expected to produce the film and his mother Jada Pinkett will also appear in the film.
