This is a thoroughly depressing and bleak movie about a drunken Diplomat in Mexico named Geoffrey , played by Albert Finney. Geoffrey's wife has been unfaithful to him and he uses this an an excuse to stay drunk 24/7. If I was a woman and married to a fat "respectable' Dimplomat I would have been unfaithful too. Geoffrey wakes up on the Feast Day of the Day Of The Dead and prays for his wife to come back which she does but he keeps on drinking and reminding her of her infidelity.Geoffrey's wife wants a second chance but all Geoffrey wants is his second bottle of Tequila to drink in the morning. The only message that this movie seems to be sending is that in infidelity in mariage there are no winners, only losers which is why I give this movie 5 stars.

Albert Finney's performance in this film is masterful! I have never seen anyone, not even Nicolas Cage in LEAVING LAS VEGAS, capture the wild emotional swings and physical tics of a drunk better than Finney does in this film. John Huston uses the atmosphere of Cuernavaca(where I am currently living) very well too.Anyone interested in great film acting should see this movie. Bravo to all involved, especially Mr Finney. He gives a a truly fantastic, award-worthy performance!

I love the scenery, but the actors were loosers. Just because I love the scenery I'll give it five stars

| This is a disturbing and gloomy portrait about a man immersed and obsessed by demons living in his mind jail .
Albert Finney made of this character to my mind , one of his finest performances as the alcoholic diplomat in Mexico 1930's .
One of my top cult films ever made in my personal list of two hundred cult movies.
A genuine gem work of John Huston.

While the sprinkling of poor performances and more than a little stereotyping of Mexico's peasantry prevent me from giving it a full five stars, UNDER THE VOLCANO deserves more than a mediocre three. Albert Finney, of course, cannot carry the movie, but that doesn't make his work any less a wonder. Huston's direction, I'm in the minority but I don't care, is a tour de force. Years and years after seeing this movie, so many scenes are etched in my memory, from the floating toy skulls in the film's opening credit, to the final crushing moments. This is not an easy movie to take--watching somebody willfully self-destruct is painful. There's a good deal of humor in between the alcoholic forays, and they ease the burden. I recommend that UNDER THE VOLCANO be given a chance, just one viewing, and then decide for yourself.
