SummaryExcellent, time after time
Content
It only takes one event for years to seem like seconds, and to make friends realize what they mean to each other. Three former college friends figure that out when they meet up at the funeral of a fourth friend. When they find out what happened, they vow never to let another woman be tossed out like the trash simply because she's middle-aged. Bette Midler and Diane Keaton are both stellar, their characters are well-written and I want to be just like them when I grow up. First Wives Club is mostly a comedy, but there are a couple of touching moments as well. A really great movie I can watch again and again.

SummaryHell Hath no Fury Like a Woman Scorned...
Content
These women are out for vengeance and they get it.

Three college friends are reunited by the death of another college friend. Though they were incredibly close in school, their lives drifted apart afterwards. One became an actress (Goldie Hawn), one became a timid housewife (Diane Keaton) and the other became a very assertive housewife (Bette Middler). After all these years, there is only one thing that they have in common. All three have been dumped by their husbands in favor of younger women. They're not going to take it laying down and decide to recoup their losses, wreack havoc and have some fun doing it.

This is a very entertaining film. The characterizations are strong almost to the point of being charactures but there is some depth to it as well. These women are dealing with real pain. In accordance with the old maxim that shared pain is lessened, they share first with each other and then with their ex-husbands. I almost feel sorry for the cretins near the end but not quite.

This is never going to be considered a great classic but it is thoroughly worthwhile for its entertainment value. It is funny and poignant. It is well worth the price.

The First Wives Club gets off to a great start. Taking advantage of great chemistry between a trio of Hollywood's most admired women. It's too bad that by the film's final act, things sort of get derailed and the ladies lose their bite.

Three former college pals--vain, past her prime actress Elise (Goldie Hawn), pit bull brassy Brenda (Bette Midler and wimpy and sheltered Annie -- reunite after the death of a friend. Soon, the ladies discover that they've all been recently dumped by their smarmy husbands for younger women. The neurotic trio decide to band together and seek vengeance, using such bureaucratic methods as the IRS and the legal system. But their dogged efforts lead them to break laws themselves. Lots of them.

Based on Olivia Goldsmith's novel of the same name, Robert Harling's screenplay allows the ladies to strut thier stuff but as things can get kinda sappy towards the end and that hurts the film. The actresses are really good here, despite the Hallmark card ending, and my belief that Hawn may have been better suited switching roles with Midler, who knows how to play a diva. All that said, it's still fun to watch Bill (Victor Garber of TV's Alias), Aaron (Stephen Collins of TV's 7th Heaven), and Morty (Dan Hedaya) squirm a bit. And as a guy, it was nice to see that the ladies get it right back...Director Hugh Wilson, best known for creating the 70's sit-com WKRP In Cincinati and launching the Police Academy films, does a good job keeping things afloat long enough for you to enjoy yourself.

The original theatrical trailer is the DVD's only extra. What do you expect for a Paramount release while the format was still in its infantcy?

The First Wives Club may sputter out in the end, but, it's still fun enough for me to recommend it with *** and a 1/2 stars.

SummaryLove this movie, so fun
Content
I watched this movie three nights in a row! It's fabulous! I saw it a few years ago and wasn't particularly crazy about it, but now I really love it. If you want nonstop fun and not a lot of sadness, a lot of laughs, get this DVD!! Goldie Hawn (Overboard), Bette Midler (Hocus Pocus) and Diane Keaton (Baby Boom) are all excellent as well as Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City-TV), Maggie Smith (Harry Potter movies), and Stockard Channing (Grease). GREAT MOVIE!!!
