 | To start, I just don't know why so many people down-grade this film. I absolutely love this movie and I've watched it more times than I can say. And just to make this known, I am NOT (and I repeat), I AM NOT BEING SARCASTIC WITH ANY OF THE REMARKS I MAKE ABOUT THIS FILM.
Paul Verhoeven is, without a doubt, an excellent director. In fact, he made three of my favorite movies: Total Recall, Basic Instinct and the movie I'm reviewing now, Showgirls.
Showgirls stars Gina Gershon, one of my favorite actresses. She is, in my opinion, one of the most sexiest and talented women in showbiz (and rock n' roll) today. Her performance is one of the greatest things about Showgirls. Whenever she's onscreen, she dominates it in its entirety. No one else could have played the part of Cristal Connors.
Showgirls also stars Elizabeth Berkley (the lead role) and Kyle Maclachlan. This may come as a shock to most who read this, but there was no miscast. Yes, Elizabeth fit the role. She's beautiful with alot of energy and charisma. She did fall in some parts , but she REALLY tried. Everyone out there has potential, they just need to find it. Berkley is fun to watch and she shines in every scene. She deserves a lot more credit. For those out there who really beat her performance into the ground, shame on you.
Showgirls's other star is Kyle Maclachlan, best known for his great performance in the American masterpiece Blue Velvet. Here he takes the 'bad guy' role of Zack. Maclachlan puts forth a very good performance, but it certainly can't beat his Blue Velvet role.
The storyline was great thanks to Joe Eszterhas, who also wrote the script for 1992's brilliant smash, Basic Instinct. The movie's shows put on at the Stardust were simply breath-taking and vivid. Definitely something that can be watched over and over.
When the Showgirls V.I.P. editon was released, I went out and bought it. The box is cramed with a lot of little goodies but I really wish that a few more features could have been put on the DVD. I wanted to shoot David Schmader for his rude and disrespectful commentary that was included on the new edition. Instead, I would have very much rather appreciated a commentary by Paul Verhoeven or Joe Eszterhas. Too bad, I guess.
Overall, enjoy Showgirls. It's pure classic all the way. |

| "Showgirls" is actually a much better film than I'd expected, and is certainly entertaining - a gaudy, glitzy, guilty pleasure full of color and razzamatazz. Where this movie does suffer, however, is in the blunderous miscasting of Elizabeth Berkley in the lead role. Although she is not an unattractive woman, Ms. Berkley just does not have the the type of toned, shapely physique that this role would have called for. Out of all the gorgeous Hollywood starlets that likely auditioned for the part, it's hard to believe that Ms. Berkley was the very best that they could come up with. That crucial detail right there just throws the whole movie off and, consequently, makes it very difficult to take the movie's storyline seriously. That's one of the reasons why it's now considered a "camp" classic, which isn't such a bad thing in itself, but I'm sure that it's certainly not what esteemed director Paul Verhoeven had intended when making this film. |

| Noami hitack to Las Vegas she stays with a black woman. She gets a job at being a striper the she makes it big at being a show girl. And in the end she makes it even bigger towards the end of this movie by being a star dusk. When her true idenity gets found out you know her past saying her father killed her mother and himself, Noami's real name is Polly & some more other stuff gets found she had no other choice but to leave Vegas. |

| Like "Mommie Dearest," "Valley of the Dolls," and so many others, taking "Showgirls" seriously will disgust and shock you - but watching it as a camp classic will bring howls of laughter. The DVD, with commentary from the Director, Stars, and Writer is a bonus because these guys take this film as a serious piece of art ! Reviewing this film is a waste of time - the writing, directing, acting, dancing - it is wretched. Elizabeth Berkley just is'nt showgirl material - she looks more like a hooker than anything but Gina Gershon pulls off her part fairly well. Kyle MacLaughlin is simply ridiculous and his sex scene with Berkley is the biggest laugh-riot of the film. |

| Ah the wonders of showbiz.
How can a budding actress (Elizabeth Burkley) go from a sweet and funny teen comedy, to a cheap and physically sickening in-your-face sex movie.
Poor Elizabeth Burkley, this poor girl believed that Showgirls was to be her big break into hollywood however it turned out to be her big break into sex/shark attack scenes in a swimming pool.
That, i believe, was the final blow to classify showgirls as a barage of in your face nudity and bad sex scenes. I believe one movie critic (known as James Lee) described the infamous swimming pool sex scene as being a cheap imitation of a shark attack scene from jaws. I seriously doubt that this film will be winning any awards... apart from the award for the worst sex scene ever filmed.
Another flaw in this film was the apparent great dancing that was peformed by Ms Burkley in a club at the beginning of the film... however on seeing this i was very worried for her safety as it seemed as if she was having an epileptic seizure from the flashing lights. However when she was joined by a co star who also began to dance in the same way i realised that i was wrong. All in all this film is rubbish. Only be recommended this film to people you hate!!! |
