Slumdog Millionaire

Background:

“This industry is for fighters and those who do not give up! It is very important to believe in yourself. Even when a hundred people rejected me, I did not lose hope and finally one of the biggest directors of all times [Danny Boyle] believed in me. Also working in this film [Slumdog Millionaire] has taught me a lot, not just in terms of acting but also about myself, which is an integral part of being a good actor.” Freida Pinto

Indian actress Freida Pinto began her career as a model in her country before making waves in Hollywood following her appearance as Latika, the heroine, in Danny Boyle's Oscar winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), which earned her Screen Actors Guild and Palm Springs International Film Festival awards.

Following the success of her debut film, Pinto, who had no previous acting experience before “Slumdog Millionaire,” was cast in Woody Allen's next film, alongside Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman. She has also joined the cast of director Julian Schnabel's film adaptation of Rula Jebreal's book, "Miral," which will be released in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

This 5' 6" exotic beauty has been called a modern "Helen of Troy" by Vanity Fair magazine, joining such screen beauties as Halle Berry, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and Gwyneth Paltrow. She also came in fourth in Details magazine's “Sexiest Woman in Hollywood.”

Exotic Fro

Childhood and Family:

"My parents always knew I wanted to become an actress, so they always supported me. My sister is from the media, so she supported me too." Freida Pinto

In Bombay, Maharashtra, India, Freida Pinto was born on October 18, 1984, to Frederick and Sylvia Pinto. Her parents are from Mangalore, a coastal town in southern India. Her father is a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda, while her mother is a principal of St. John’s Universal High School (Goregaon). Freida has one elder sister, Sharon Pinto, who is an associate producer on the Indian news channel NDTV.

Freida, nicknamed “Fro,” attended Carmel of St. Joseph School in Malad and completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, in Mumbai in 2005. She is also trained in some forms of Indian classical dance and Salsa.

Freida was engaged to Rohan Antao from 2007 until January 2009. They had been in a relationship since 2003. She lives in Malad, a suburb of Mumbai, but is set to move to New York to pursue her acting career.

"New York is like Bombay in a way. Its pretty chaotic too. Just a little more organized in terms of traffic and more high rises whereas Bombay is crazy. You step out of your building, you step out of your home, and on one side of you have the high rises and just on the other side you have the slums." Freida Pinto

Full Circle

Career:

"The camera never gave me cold feet. I have always felt comfortable in front of it. When I gave my first shot for the film, I was a little scared. But then I gained confidence." Freida Pinto

Following her graduation from college in 2005, Freida Pinto became a professional model and was signed up to the Elite Model Agency in India, where she was selected for numerous campaigns for brands such as De Beers, Visa, Vodafone India, MTV, Chanel, eBay, and Airtel. She was also featured in several television and print commercials for products such as Wrigleys Chewing Gum, Škoda Auto, and Hutch. Additionally, she has graced such magazine covers as Femina & Femina Girl and FNL.

Between 2006 and 2007, Pinto anchored the international travel show “Full Circle” on Zee International Asia Pacific. The show successfully completed 52 episodes and explored cultures and traditions of Fiji, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore, and other places. During this time, Pinto also appeared in several TV shows, including “Wendell Rodricks for Lakme Fashion Week 2006,” “Sahara,” and the History Channel.

In 2007, Pinto, who has been interested in acting since age 5, auditioned for the part of Bond Girl Camille in “Quantum of Solace” (2008), but lost the role to Olga Kurylenko. She then auditioned for a new film by “Trainspotting” director Danny Boyle, who would be shooting a new film in India. With no previous professional acting role, Pinto auditioned for the lead female role of Latika and got the part. About film director Danny Boyle, Pinto commented, "Danny is a very encouraging man. He lets you do what you want. He has no rules for a particular scene. He lets you emote the way you want. He would tell us where we would go wrong and motivate us to do better."

Pinto played Latika in the feature blockbuster film “Slumdog Millionaire.” When asked if any scenes had been difficult for her, Pinto explained, "It was really difficult for me because doing the kitchen scene was by far the toughest, because she’s so submissive there and she’s s frightened. The real Freida would fight back and run away the first opportunity she got. And here she’s saying, ‘No no no,” but she's meaning, ‘Yes, I want to but I can’t.’ After doing the scene over and over again, I started getting really submissive by nature and Danny just came and said something and I was like, ‘OK, I’ll do it.’ So the fighter in me just died after sometime. I think it was important for the character."

She also described her experience working with the rest of the cast, "It was very encouraging. Dev Patel and I are new. This is our first film so we supported and encouraged each other. With ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ I have reached a different level of professionalism. And since I am starting my career with a Hollywood film, it has given me great exposure. It has been a fantastic experience."

"Slumdog Millionaire" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and was subsequently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the London Film Festival. The film enjoyed critical acclaim and awards during its limited North American release on November 12, 2008, by Fox Searchlight Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures. It later had a nationwide grand release in the United Kingdom on January 9, 2009, and in the United States on January 23, 2009. It premiered in Mumbai on January 22, 2009.

About memorable instances during the shoot, Pinto recalled, "The whole film was a memorable experience. There was one instance when Dev, Mahesh [Manjrekar] and I were supposed to make a sandwich and Mahesh will crack some joke and we all start laughing. He will become serious immediately and give his shot right but Dev and I would just not stop laughing. Another instance was when we were shooting at CST [Chatrapathi Shivaji Railway Terminus] station. I had to run, shouting for help. Every time we had a break or a cut, people in the station would imitate us and scream for help."

"Slumdog Millionaire" was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 2009 and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Original Song. It also won five Critics' Choice Awards, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards, including Best Film. Pinto co-won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and a Palm Springs International Film Festival Award for Breakthrough Performance. She was also nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Black Reel Award for Best Ensemble.

Following the internationally success of her debut film, Pinto began studying acting at The Barry John's Acting Studio in Andheri and was trained by her mentor, veteran theatre guru Barry John.

"I like to try new things all the time. I like to do something different just for the experience. I have learnt different forms of dance like Indian classical and Salsa. I am open to any kind of acting. Comedy is difficult and so I am working on that. This is why I am doing a workshop with Barry John so that I sharpen my acting skills." Freida Pinto

Recently, Pinto was cast in Woody Allen's film set in London. She will join other cast members that include Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman. Shooting for the film starts in July 2009.

Pinto has also joined the cast of director Julian Schnabel's “Miral,” a film adaptation of Rula Jebreal's book that documents the true story of Hind Husseini (will be portrayed by Palestinian actress Hiam Abbas of “The Visitor”), the woman who created the Dar Al-Tifi orphanage in Jerusalem in 1948 when the state of Israel came into existence. The film will be shot in Israel and the Palestinian territories, with a release scheduled for 2010.

"I don’t want to box myself. It’s too early. I just started. I definitely want to go out there and try. Whatever comes my way, I hope its good stuff." Freida Pinto
