"It's fun to be a woman. It's fun to flirt and wear makeup and have boobs." Eva Mendes
Half Cuban, half American actress Eva Mendes achieved her breakout role while portraying Denzel Washington's sexy Latin wife, Sara Harris, in the acclaimed Training Day (2001). She later gained more fame appearing in such films as 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), Out of Time (2003), and Stuck on You (2003). Recently Mendes played Will Smith's love interest, columnist Sara, in Andy Tennant's romantic comedy Hitch.
"The celebrity world can be so ugly. Everyone seems to have slept with everyone else and it's some sort of strange weird cycle. I don't want to get into that." Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes, who is often compared to actresses Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek, was reported to have seduced actor Matt Damon during the making of the comedy Stuck on You (2003). Mendes denied this, stating, "The most bizarre story was that I was dating Matt Damon. I found it irritating, because it wasn't true. We've been friends since making the Farrelly brothers' 'Stuck On You' together."
Childhood and Family:
The youngest of four children, Eva Mendes was born on March 5, 1978 in Houston, Texas to Cuban parents. With her three siblings, young Eva and her parents moved to Miami and Los Angeles.
A big fan of music and outdoor sports like hiking, biking, skiing, and mountain climbing, Eva attended the Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California. She later studied Marketing at the State University in Northridge, California, which she later left to pursue her acting career.
" ...I feel I'll take on the responsibility of showing the world a whole different kind of Latin woman." Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes once dreamed of becoming a professional interior designer until her photo in her neighbor's portfolio attracted an agent. Soon after she decided to leave college and pay serious attention to acting. Eva landed her first acting work appearing in several advertisements and music videos, including Aerosmith's Hole in My Soul (wearing an American flag bikini) and Will Smith's Miami. She also guest starred in an episode of the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest (in December 1998, as Hanna) and ER (in February 1998, as Donna).
The horror film, Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998), was Eva's debut motion picture work. Ethan Wiley cast her with Stacy Galina and Alexis Arquette in his adaptation of Stephen King's short story with the same title. Afterward, Eva splashed through small comedies, John Fortenberry's A Night at the Roxbury (1998, starring Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan) and Erik Fleming's My Brother the Pig (1999, starring Nick Fuoco and Scarlett Johansson).
After acting in the disappointing TV movie, The Disciplines, in 2000, Eva played a role in the teen hit thriller movie, John Ottman's Urban Legends: Final Cut (with Jennifer Morrison and Matthew Davis). She also could be seen in Andrzej Bartkowiak's adaptation of John Westermann's novel, the crime action Exit Wounds (2001, starring Steven Seagal and DMX).
Eva's breakout role was Denzel Washington's Latin sexy wife Sara in Antoine Fuqua's crime-drama Training Day (2001, with Ethan Hawke). After the film's release, Eva was offered roles in such 2003 notable films as John Singleton's crime action 2 Fast 2 Furious (alongside Paul Walker), Robert Rodriguez's thriller action Once Upon a Time in Mexico (teamed with Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Johnny Depp), and the Farrelly brothers' comedy Stuck on You (opposite Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear).
Mendes also appeared as Mike Epps' sweetheart Gina in Kevin Bray's action-comedy, All About the Benjamins (2002, starring Ice Cube), and rejoined with Denzel Washington in Carl Franklin's crime-drama Out of Time (2003). Meanwhile, she could also be seen in an American Express credit card commercial which featured Sheryl Crow's Soak Up the Sun.
2005 saw Eva as Will Smith's love attention, reporter Sara, in Andy Tennant's romance-comedy Hitch. Her role as a black man's (Will Smith) Latin partner was greeted with mixed opinions. Eva responded, "I don't even know what to say about it anymore... Certainly I've benefited, because I've got to work with Ice Cube, Denzel and Will. But it's lame. I wish the mentality wasn't so closed."
Also in 2005, Eva played the role of Luke Wilson's ex-girlfriend in the Wilson brother's romance-comedy The Wendell Baker Story.
The Latin beauty's star keeps shining. Eva will be seen in upcoming films Trust the Man (Directed by Bart Freundlich), and Mark Steven Johnson's thriller Ghost Rider (starring Nicolas Cage).
Eva recently branched out her talents in writing and modeling. She was reported to have penned a children's book titled Crazy Leggs Beshee, and embraced the world of fashion when she signed a contract with the prestigious fashion house, Dolce & Gabbana, to pose for their men's wear latest advertisement promotion.
"I don't go to premieres. I attend film openings I'm in and that's about it. Fame and celebrity doesn't matter to me. The longevity of my career does." Eva Mendes
