 | When "Before Sunrise" was released 10 years ago, I never got the chance to watch it. I only just managed to watch it after I had seen "Before Sunset" and really enjoyed it. I was more than surprised though because this is even better than its sequel. If you try to explain the story line to someone, it probably sounds extremely boring. Boy and Girl meet on a train and hang out for 14 hours, talking and walking the streets of Vienna and the next morning they seperate again...well, it's so much more than that. Not only does the dialogue keep you hooked but also the acting is outstanding. I especially like Delpy in this movie. Hawke's character gets a little annoying at times but nevertheless, he is acting well. I am really glad that I got to watch the movie after the sequel was out though. Otherwise it would have killed me not knowing whether they will ever meet again. And they did...10 years later. Watch them both. Preferably on the same day! "Before Sunrise" is definitely a movie to keep and watch again. |

 | As a frequent traveler who has on more than one occasion, experienced that instant connection with someone and "hopped off the train" into adventures in romance, I expected to love this movie.
Unfortunately, I was wrong.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy act very well, and their characters are completely believeable. What's unbelievable, is that their characters could be drawn to each other. There does not seem to be a spark at all between the characters, and one wonders why the Julie Delpy character even likes the Ethan Hawke character. There are a few interesting, even mildly entertaining scenes, but most of the movie drags on without anything to hold your attention. I watched the whole thing, waiting for it to get better and live up the reviews, but it never did.
I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this movie. |

 | I just wanted to echo the negative reviews that have been posted so far. I saw no chemistry between the couple and the Ethan Hawke character really got on my nerves. It was a pointless waste of time watching two people (especially the girl) waste their whole evening and if I were the girl I'd have had to ditch him early on. He really seemed self-absorbed and needed to lighten up. I guess this stuff was supposed to be deep. But the dialogue seemed merely written by a shallow person imagining what depth might be and getting it wrong and sounding totally contrived. |

 | First, a note about the amazon.com review which tells us that 'Before Sunrise' is about a "14-hour tryst in Vienna." The dictionary defines a tryst as "an arrangement for two people, usually lovers, to meet." Viewers of this movie will agree: the meeting of Julie Delpy's 'Celine' and Ethan Hawke's 'Jesse' is anything but arranged, and these these are could-be, wanna-be, not-quite-there-yet lovers.
That aside, 'Sunrise' is highly skilled filmmaking, crammed full of witty, intelligent dialogue which - in an impressive feat - comes out of the mouths of Delpy and Hawke sounding natural and unforced. The standout scene (in my mind) is probably one in which Delpy says she "needs to phone her friend in Paris" and proceeds to engage an initially perplexed Hawke in a simulated conversation that reveals exactly how she feels about what's going on between the two of them. Then, when the the roles are reversed, Delpy shows an ear for comedy with her characterization of Hawke's back-home buddy Frank, answering his call with a dead-on "Yo, dude, what's up?" Who wouldn't fall in love with Julie Delpy circa 1995 (or now for that matter)? |

 | When you watch 'Before Sunrise' you should watch it with an open mind, because this film can be quite boring for people that don't. For romantic's like myself you should have no problem falling in love with the story.
With the beautiful almost to casual dialouge the film is brought to life by Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy). The two young strangers meet on a train to Vienna. Jesse is an American traveling around Europe and going to Vienna to catch his plane back to America at 9:30 am the next day. Celine is a young french woman coming from a visit with her Grandmother who lives in Budapest. She is now returning to her home in Paris. After seeing a German couple creating a scene on the train Jesse and Celine begin to talk to each other. They eventually move to the lounge part of the train where they have lunch with each other and eventually decide to spend the night in Vienna together before Jesse has leave for America the next day.
The clever dialouge, and great casted two leads make this film shine. From a person who has been in love before and had to be seperated between a great distance, this film is dead on accurate. When watching them talk to each other and worrying about how one is going to deal with the parting.
This a little bit of a *Spoiler* but I'm going to say it anyway. When they finally leave each other, I remember feeling and acting the same way when my girlfriend moved to Arizona (I live on the east coast) Hawke displays how you feel when you're put into that situation almost too perfectly. Sometimes I wonder if they're acting.
I cannot wait to see the sequel "Before Sunset".
If you like this film you would probably like: "French Kiss", "Shakespeare in Love", "When Harry Met Sally...". WARNING: THIS FILM IS NOT FOR THOSE WHO FEEL LONELY. IF YOU ARE SINGLE AND LONELY THEN DO NOT WATCH THIS. YOU WILL FEEL HORRIBLE, it's sad enough watching it when you're taken.
Happy Watching |
