His films are frequently spoken in different languages and dialects, with stories taking place in Sicilian settings or featuring Sicilian characters. He also often works with actor Vincenzo Amato. Crialese has directed the films “Once We Were Strangers” (1997), “Respiro” (2002), “Golden Door” (2006) and “Terraferma”(2011). The latter film has been selected as the Italian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards.
Childhood and Family: Emanuele Crialese was born on July 26, 1965, in Rome, Italy. He moved from Italy to the United States in 1991 to study film direction at New York University.
In 1994, Emanuele Crialese made a short titled “ Heartless.” The short won him a Special Mention the 1994 Capalbio Cinema. Three years later, he directed his first feature length film “Once We Were Strangers” (1997), which he also produced and wrote. The film, starring Vincenzo Amato, Jessica Whitney Gould and Anjalee Deshpande, the film was nominated for Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic category at the Sundance Film Festival. It also brought Crialese the Le Roger for Best Feature - USA at the 1998 Avignon/New York Film Festival and a Crystal Star nomination for Best European Feature at the 1999 Brussels International Film Festival. In 2002, Crialese directed and wrote his second feature, the Italian comedy/drama “Respiro,” starring Valeria Golino, Vincenzo Amato, and Francesco Casisa. The film earned positive reviews from the English-language critics, and was nominated for 21 awards, including 12 wins. Crialese himself picked up the Critics Week Grand Prize and the Young Critics Award for Best Feature at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, Three Castles from the 2002 Castellinaria International Festival of Young Cinema, Gardanne Film Festival's Audience Award, CONAI Award and Creative Journeys Award from the 2002 Giffoni Film Festival, Mons International Festival of Love Films' Audience Award, the Special Mention at the 2002 Bratislava International Film Festival, a César nomination for Best European Union Film (Meilleur film de l'Union Européenne), a David di Donatello nomination for Best Film (Miglior Film), an Audience Award nomination for Best Director and a European Discovery of the Year nomination at the 2003 European Film Awards, and a Silver Ribbon nomination for Best Screenplay. Crialese returned with his third film, “Golden Door” (“Nuovomondo”; 2006), which he both directed and wrote. The Italian drama, which is based around a family's migration from Italy to New York during the beginning of the 20th Century, premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 8, 2006 to critical acclaim and won six out of seven nominations at the festival, including the 'CinemAvvenire' Award for Best Film, FEDIC Award, Pasinetti Award for Best Film, SIGNIS Award, Silver Lion for Revelation and the UNICEF Award. The film also many other awards and nominations, including Capri Director Award and Capri Movie of the Year Award at the 2006 Capri, Hollywood, a Critics Award (Film Commission Torino Piemonte) nomination, a David of the Youth nomination as well as David nominations for Best Director (Migliore Regista), Best Film (Miglior Film) and Best Screenplay (Migliore Sceneggiatura) at the 2007 David di Donatello nomination, a Chlotrudis nomination for Best Original Screenplay, a European Film nomination for Best Director, a Golden Globe Italy nomination for Best Screenplay (Migliore Sceneggiatura), Silver Ribbon nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay, Silver Apricot - Special Prize for Best Film at the 2007 Yerevan International Film Festival. Crialese's latest film, “Terraferma” (“Dry Land”), which he directed and co-wrote with Vittorio Moroni, premiered at the 68th Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2001 and won the Special Jury Prize, the Pasinetti Award for Best Film and the UNICEF Award at festival, in addition to being nominated for a Golden Lion. The film won Capri Movie of the Year Award and Capri Peace Award at the 2011 Capri, Hollywood and was nominated for Golden Anchor Award at the 2011 Haifa International Film Festival and Golden Antigone at the 2011 Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival. “Terraferma” has been chosen as the Italian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards.
