 | Great plot, beautiful liftoff, disintegrates on re-entry. Hey wait, that's what happens in the movie! haw haw
Another candidate for the "Oh What Could Have Been" Top 10 film of all time. Hal Holbrook plays a NASA muckety-muck struggling through a budget crunch on the Hill after the Apollo program was scrapped. The only thing now left to do is to conquer Mars, and Hal is told by the Prez simply "don't screw this up!" When it's discovered that Halliburton skimped on the delivery of a functional life support system, the decision is made to pull the pilots, and attempt a public relations coup and save his own butt by launching an unmanned mission with the pilots being whisked to a deserted base somewhere near Hell to complete the charade in Fake-O-Rama. Everything was looking good 9 months later, the astronauts were still on ice, and OJ still hadn't spoken a single line, but on the return trip the capsule lost it's heat sheild and we all know what happens when the heat shield goes right?
Monitoring the action, our heroes get wise to the situation, James Brolin springs into action, Sam Waterston cracks a joke, and OJ grunts, then they hijack a plane with no gas and wind up on a John Ford set being chased by your basic black helicopters that have shoot to kill orders.
I've often wondered why James Brolin never became a star, now I know...it has to do with a rattlesnake. Telly Savalas makes a hilarious appearance as a surly cropduster with wicked negotiation skills. Excitement and tension galore, and then it ends; stupidly, and with Elliot Gould trying to do something he apparently had never attempted before...running.
The DVD is about what you would expect from a film of this quality, the transfer is OK, but dont get sucked in by the "Dolby 5.1" cause it's not there. The sound is all to the front, with no L/R, and absolutely no surround effect whatsoever. Trailers and actor bios. Yawn. 3 Feds |

 | Capricorn One is a film about a mission to Mars that fails, so those in charge decide to fake it to save face. Coincidentally, it's also a film in which the third act fails, so those in charge decide to fake it to save face. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie and the acting is first rate (although take note that O.J. Simpson received very few lines), but the fact is that it ended at a very odd place. I'm not revealing where that was, but any of you familiar with screenwriting will know what I mean when I say it had no third act. Yes, it was a well done drama that gripped and intrigued you, but the big payoff that you expect isn't there. Instead you are left to assume that it happens off camera as the credits roll. It was like reading a really good book and then discovering the last chapter is missing. But, if you can stand to fill in the blanks yourself, this really is a pretty good flick. It's best feature is that it will get you thinking about a real life incident.
The movie was based loosely on the possibility that the 1969 moon landing was faked by NASA in order to beat the Russians. This may sound insane, but when one is presented with some of the evidence, one becomes at least intrigued by the possibility. (Check out the Fox special "Conspiracy theory: Did We Land on the Moon?" Yeah I know it's a Fox special, but it's good, trust me.) Questions such as "Why can we see shadows on the moon pointing in conflicting directions when NASA claims the only light source was the sun?" and "How does the American flag flap in the supposedly airless atmosphere?" have caused some to believe we never made it to the moon.
Regardless of this, Capricorn One is a C+ film with an A+ cast and a D- ending, but it still receives my endorsement and I encourage you to go pick it up and judge for yourself. |

 | I saw this movie back in 1978 at my local Drive In Movie Theatre with my girlfriend at the time, Cheryl. Cheryl wanted to get into the back seat but I was enjoying this movie too much. It concerns a group of three astronauts who are forced to fake a landing on Mars and then they are on the run in the desert. This movie stars the HOT Brenda Vaccaro and the equally beautiful Karen Black who both give fine performances. This movie has become something of a Cult Classic in recent years and deservedly so. It was not that often that a movie could make me neglect the ever so seductive charms of Cheryl!!! |

 | This is the movie to get if you love Conspracies and Hoaxes. It is about a Plot by Para government agencies to dupe the American people and Keep space program funding by filming a fake NASA mission to mars, then they try to terminate anybody who could expose the truth. The movie is the inovator of sinister ''Black helicopters'' and the SECRET GOVERNMENT guys. Elaborate media hoaxes, disinformation and far reaching conspiracies that have the power to make people dissapear are all in here. One of the first films to bring up how people could be manipulated by the pseudo reality of TV.I am not saying that this kind of thing happens but it is interesting from the perspective of Folklore.BLUE THUNDER another film about scary helicopters is a similiar film and equaly unique. |

 | This is a terrific, if not always believable, action movie that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat while rooting for the good guys, and laughing out loud from time to time. How many movies can offer all that? Unlike so many action movies, the bad guys here are not incompetent fools. That makes for a better, tenser movie. You can't go wrong with this one, and even the kids can watch it with you. |
