 | Sylvester Stallone was set to play yet another monosylabbic action film wonder-cop back in 1984. He had signed on as a gritty Detroit cop who finds himself in posh Beverly Hills avenging his brothers death. Fortunately for the world, we never got to see him in that flick although many of the elements appeared in his next film, COBRA. No, this film was not shelved, it was re-cast, re-conceived and re-written with the Saturday night Live and 48 Hours star Eddie Murphy in the drivers seat. The rest is, as they too often say, history...
BEVERLY HILLS COP was the first succesful police action film with a comic lead. Before that most cops had that way too cool, "Go ahead, make my day" attitude. But, putting a comedian with an amazing command of foul language up front brought in the crowds... and the clones.
Axel Foley is a 'fish outta water' police detective investigating a Detroit murder in Beverly Hills. He is harrassed and tailed by Beverly Hills Detectives Taggart and Rosewood, played by John Ashton and Judge Reinhold. His tactics seem crude and clash with the police culture in the land of sun and fun, but, quickly they learn he is on to something. Along the way he looks up childhood friend Jenny Summers (Lisa Eilbacher with extreme 80s hair). Murphy's scene with Art Gallery Concierge, "Serge" (Bronson Pinchot) is one of the funniest scenes to come out of any film in the past 30 years.
The opening scene involving a high-speed semi-truck chase is a clever mixture of extreme action and comedy. It properly sets the stage for the rest of the film. Watch for Damon Wayans as a 'fruit' salesman. The DVD is part of a new Special Edition release of the "COP" trilogy and has a nice audio/video transfer. Its supplemental features include 2 making-of documentaries and an unexciting commentary by the brilliant director, Martin Brest (MIDNIGHT RUN, SCENT OF A WOMAN). Followed up by two sub-standard sequels.

 | It's really nice to see Beverly Hills Cop get it's long list of great reviews. The Terminator(Arnold Schwarzeneggar), and Indiana Jones:The Temple of Doom(Harrison Ford)... both overshadowed the release of Beverly Hills Cop back in 1984.
Eddie Murphy... I honestly can't say this was his best funniest role ever. 48 Hrs.(Nick Nolte), and Coming To America(Arsenio Hall) were both hilarious. I just think Beverly Hills Cop did boost Murphy's career even further... with the help of two sequels.
Judge Reinhold... who plays the goofy cop to Eddie Murphy, is a great comedian. His boyish talk and kid smile really makes you wonder how he got anywhere on being a detective. Vice Versa(Fred Savage), and Fast Times At Ridgemont High(Sean Penn) are two other excellent comedies you should check out with him.
John Ashton... the ready to retire laid back cop has his funny humor. I think with all of these three actors together, you really a get a lesson of great comedy. Ashton plays a good fatherly role also in movies such as Some Kind Of Wonderful(Eric Stoltz), and She's Having A Baby(Kevin Bacon).
The director, Martin Brest... has done a few oddball different titles. Directing Midnight Run(Robert De Niro), Meet Joe Black(Brad Pitt) even the movie Gigli(Ben Affleck). Totally opposit movies from Beverly Hills Cop, but worth taking a look at.
The dvd quality to Beverly Hills Cop is better than your average dvd. You get 5.1 surround sound, you get a commentary with the director, and interviews with all of the actors. The "Casting Beverly Hills Cop" featurette is excellent. Honestly if I was you... I would buy the box set to this Beverly Hills Cop trilogy. For a price of only ten bucks more, it's really a steal if you do.
The action in this movie is top notch 80's. The comedy is classic Murphy stuff compared to a lot of his movies today. So if you want to see how Eddie Murphy became so successful in his long career in action, comedy, and kids movies. Beverly Hills Cop is the movie to watch! |

 | I liked this movie but it didn't stand out to me to be one of the best movies I have seen. The one thing that did bother me is that this movie is rated PG-13 and there is a nude dancer scene...not to mention nowhere on the dvd there is brief nudity. |

 | Starring in arguably his most memorable role, Eddie Murphy lights up the big screen with his 1980's blockbuster hit Beverly Hills Cop. Showcasing the unique comic talents of a young career on the rise, the former Saturday Night Live cast member's smiling humor and charismatic onscreen presence take an adequate screenplay and turn it into a smash film. Appearances by Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot (as the trendy 'Serge') combine with Murphy's antics to make Beverly Hills Cop a hilarious and highly entertaining movie...
Eddie Murphy plays the role of Axel Foley, a freewheeling Detroit police officer who witnesses the murder of a close friend on the force during a botched drug bust. Linking the murders back to Beverly Hills, Foley takes an extended vacation from his job in Detroit. But rather than relax, he makes his way to Beverly Hills where he plans on conducting his own investigation.
In pursuit of the murderers, Foley uncovers a massive drug smuggling operation run by one of the elite socialites of Beverly Hills. Digging for the truth, the Detroit cop is forced to butt heads with the Beverly Hills police department and confront the drug ring's various henchmen. Despite direct orders from their superior, Beverly Hills cops Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) eventually change from adversaries of Foley (attempting to halt his illegal investigations) to willing participants in his uncovering of the illegal drug ring. In the end, Foley finds the murderer, but will he get his revenge? Will the Beverly Hills police arrest him before he does? You'll have lots of fun finding out...
Complimented by a hit soundtrack which features four smash hits (Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On," The Pointer Sisters' "Neutron Dance," Patti LaBelle's "New Attitude," and Harold Faltermeyer's breakthrough hit "Axel F"), the film's action and suspense sequences play out to the backdrop of adrenaline pumping beats and synthetic keyboard sounds. The music itself provides a small glimpse in the musical experimentation of an age that witnessed the convergence of high technology and sound. In a way, Beverly Hills Cop typifies the decade of the 1980s, but it does so without being so overly engrossed in the cultural fads of the day as to be outdated and ridiculous in the eyes of a modern audience. This is one of the core strengths of the film and one of the reasons millions of fans enjoy watching reruns of the movie on cable.
One of the more unique films of the 1980s, Beverly Hills Cop created a new sub-genre of film by splicing the serious action/suspense genre with the comedic personality/comedy genre. As a rare talent, Eddie Murphy is uniquely positioned to pull off the coup, carrying the film on the back of his personal likeability and hilarious brand of comedy. Performances by Judge Reinhold and John Ashton serve to compliment Murphy, and together, the three form a relatable, "average guy" click that audiences feel inclined to root for. As a result, the viewer is never bored, whether being entertained by mere suspense or hilarious comedy. Without a doubt, Beverly Hills Cop is one of the top ten comedies of its decade, and that's why it's a definite must-see movie...

 | This fast-paced action comedy movie is wonderful. I have seen this movie many times and each time it is terrific to watch. After 20 years this movie is still better than many others who have tried to copy the success of this film. This is one of only a few great movies that are so captivating that if you start to watch it, even for only 10 or 15 minutes, you feel like you just have to finish watching the movie. This is true even if you have already watched it many times before.
