SummaryOld Action Heroes don't die, they just fade away.
Content
Instructions: rent Steven Seagall's latest action movie knuckle-fest "Exit Wounds". Insert in DVD player; watch first 15 minutes of movie, remove from DVD player. Return to video store.

If you follow those instructions to the letter, you'll have fun with "Exit Wounds", which features one of the best opening sequences of any action movie in recent memory (Seagall attempts to thwart a brash, brazen assassination attempt).

There's also a great scene---strike that, a Priceless Scene: hipster uber-villain (played convincingly by rapper DMX) and a henchman go on a shopping spree in an exotic car lot (ultimately settling on a Lamborghini Murcielago, paid for in cash out of a golf bag).

The scene is dope, def, and cool---it's all GOOD, Dawgz!----,in a New Jack City way. And that's a shame, really: it's so cool it just makes you grind your teeth as you begin, over the course of two hours, to realize that the rest of the movie just can't hold a candle to its opening minutes.

An action movie should be exciting; after Seagall foils a neatly organized assassination attempt on the U.S. Vice President (a brilliant little sequence which merits one star on its own, and from which 95% of the trailer material was taken), "Exit Wounds" is not exciting.

It's stale. It's rehashed. Honestly, were it not for DMX, the few riffs from the movie's excellent rap soundtrack, and the equipment, I would have thought I was watching an eighties Seagall flick. And that's surprising, given that the movie is helmed by "Romeo Must Die" director Andrzej Bartkowiak, who also did the cinematography for Speed, Lethal Weapon 4, and Devil's Advocate.

The plot, what there is of it, deals with police corruption, and features a major twist near the end that takes the punch out of the story and doesn't make any sense---but by that time you've stopped caring. You've seen all of this before---done better.

Worst of all, Seagall is just too old to be a credible action hero; he's reached that wheezing, shortness of breath stage that afflicted Roger Moore back in "View to a Kill"---except Seagall doesn't have the acting chops that Moore was able to fall back on. Tom Arnold is thrown in for laughs, but the laughs are so feeble, and the jokes so stale, that you're laughing *at* Arnold and Seagall---not with them.

Midway through "Exit Wounds" I was fighting to stay awake, and that's a shame, given that the first 15 minutes of the movie contained more sheer, hectic energy than any movie I've seen since "Face/Off".

Rent the DVD for that opener if you dare, but if you stay any longer you'll see it's true: Old Action Heroes never die, they just fade away.

Summaryabout the movie exit wounds......
Content
The story is basically talking about good cop trying to get rid of the bad cop and there are a lot of action scenes eg: fighting, gun fire and sword fighting etc. This film also contain naked pole dance which I could say a good recommendation for those whom are interested in this genre of movie/film.

N/B: This DVD is supposed to be M18 in Singapore but because of the killer indication ('papa'), it is heard to be rated under R21.

There are other variety of films that might be showing around the world. They are:-

SummaryNot One of His Best
Content
The film opens with a Vice President spouting hysterical propaganda about handguns in Detroit. When he leaves, an assassination is attempted by killers dressed as motorcycle policemen! [Can you believe this? No explanation follows.] Sent to a new precinct, Boyd attends an anger management class. Leaving early, he gets a chance to manage his anger when he meets strangers admiring his pickup truck. Next there is the comic relief in buying an expensive import car. Boyd encounters a drug sale, busts it up and arrests a drug dealer. But this is an undercover cop, and Boyd finds himself on traffic duty (more laughs). Boyd gets a chance to meet other officers at an intramural event. Later we see a robbery by masked men who steal 50 Kilos of heroin. [Does anyone keep this amount?]

More action occurs at a nightclub. Seagal shows his fighting skills in a choreographed scene. The film continues to develop the story. This film does not have as good a story as his earlier films. Boyd asks a news reporter to gather information on a person with a clean record. But then he is surprised by villains. There is an exciting car chase and crashes, action to pad out this story. Another shooting and car chase in a parking garage adds more action. It shows why you should always wear a seat belt. There is a final showdown that reveals the last villain. Friendly forces arrive, like the Cavalry in an Old Western. There is a shootout that puts an end to the conspiracy.

A good movie has a good storyline, its not a sequence of violent actions. "Hard to Kill" and "Out for Justice" were better films. Seagal seems to be older, fatter, and slower than in earlier films. John Wayne's films hid his aging well.

SummarySeagal proved he still had it, then flunked out again
Content
A lot of you may have considered Steven Seagal's non-presence for the 4 years before this film a blessing (he last appeared in 1997's Fire Down Below, which was a No. 1 hit but still weak movie) but I think that audiences are just too dismissive of him and that he needs to be given another chance. They waited for him to slip up and as soon as he delivered a flop he got called names and we forgot about him. Give the guy a break. The Mob is after him! And in real life his Aikido won't do him any good in that kind of situation.

With Exit Wounds, veteran action producer Joel Silver had thrust Steve back in the limelight, put him on the Slimfast diet (it really, really works) and given him better material to work with. After all an actor can only do as good as the script.

From a novel of the same name by John Westerman (but bearing about 40% resemblance to it) the plot centres on Orin Boyd, a cop busted down to Patrolman after a rough encounter with the Vice-President (Gore? Cheney?). Once on the streets Boyd's suspicious nose can't keep him out of trouble with undercover cops who are trying to bust local Drug Boss Latrell Walker (DMX), or so it seems.

Boyd smells foul play and intrudes upon a stakeout, handcuffing TK (Anthony Anderson), one of Walkers men to the front of his car before doing so. When he returns to find the front of his car missing and the thug long gone Boyd takes it upon as his responsibility to get it back and inadvertently expose a ring of corrupt cops in the process. After all his car comes first.

There are many attempts at irony throughout the movie and surprisingly enough most of them work. Boyd is forced to attend rage control classes in which he meets eccentric TV host Henry Wayne (Tom Arnold) who becomes his wannabe partner. But sadly enough the classes don't work as Boyd continues to uses violence first, ask questions later. And there is a public service announcement too. Seagal survives a car wreck by airbag. A later car crash victim doesn't have one and dies.

There are only a couple of 'cop movie' clichés but not much else. The bad guys are pretty stereotyped although they serve their purpose. And it's a pity we know who they are as soon as we see them, but they were never intended to be used for suspense in the first place. But they really do stink the place out. You WANT them to die.

Bartkowiak's direction is better than in his debut Romeo Must Die and adds a heavy dose of frenetic rush to such a fast-paced film. Action scenes are handled with experience and care. There is no MTV-style editing and no confusion to be had. He should have spent just a tiny little bit more time with the characters. It's not often that action movies have such strong characters and Exit Wounds does give us enough of them.

Seagal had learned a little, just a little, more in the acting area but still doesn't know how to express himself much. There's too much frowning and not enough other emotions from Boyd. We do want to feel more from him but he won't allow us. I guess this is just how Seagal is. He just can't get away from himself too much no matter what role he plays. I wish Seagal would try harder. He'll win more fans this way. But it's good to see that he is in better condition than of late and has proved to Hollywood that he is still here and still frowning. Sadly he has chosen to star in loads of rather poor Asian movies since (the real-life Mob forced him into this) and as we all await Under Siege 3 we don't hold our breath.

The DVD is in great-looking 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with a brilliant Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. Some fluff extras are included.
