SummarySubversiveness at its greatest
Content
ST has to be the most subversive movie of the decade. On the surface you have what is tantamount to a cheesy B-movie flick with horrible acting, dialogue that has no basis in reality, and characters that seem taken straight out of a Leni Reifenstahl propaganda film. Its all intentional obviously, as the movie itself is essentially a propaganda film...or is it?

The reality underneath all the glamour is that earth long ago had its democracy overthrown, society is now a one world government run by the military, human life has little value and people are given everything except liberty. Rapid military expansion in the milky way has created a Star Wars style empire. Luckily the galaxy apparently has no other inhabitants other than some bugs, which interestingly are on the other side of the galaxy minding their own business. Naturally the military bites off more than it can chew, and with a confrontation with these bugs pulls the human empire into an unwinnable war. The problem is the humans are losing, and badly. By the end of the movie you get one last propaganda reel which is strikingly different from the reality you see in the movie just minutes before.....the child and elderly soldiers that Rico is forced to take into his squad suddenly are young adults in the propaganda loop.
The movie ends on a high note, with the military showing off its new technologies, its new tactics and new weapons, but obviously humanity is doomed....it is running out of soldiers, running out of assets, and running out of time.

The movie ends with the last bit of bravado: "We will fight, and we will win!".

Hitler had plenty of those speeches too in May of 1945

SummaryA complete waste of time
Content
This is literally one of the worst movies ive ever seen. If you like those sci-fi, destrustion-based type movies, watch something else. Even if this fits that description, half of the things in this movie are random events, which make no sense at all. A total piece of crap.

This movie falls way, way down there at the bottom of hill just like Mars Attacks.

After having read quite a few of the reviews, I had to respond. A lot of the reviewers are trying to compare Robert Heinlein's book to the movie. They are two different animals. Look at "Minorty Report" by Phillip K Dick. In my opinion, nothing like the movie. I'm just going to review the movie because that is what this is about.

I found that I actually cared for these characters. I enjoyed this film from begining to end. I even liked the Zoe Poledouris version of the David Bowie song "I Have not Been to Oxford Town" at the Graduation Dance.

This film can be analyzed as a Nazi propaganda film or as a critique of Fascism or as a good, fast paced, sci-fi flick. This movie was created to entertain and that it does. I was suprised by one thing however, that Casper Van Dien could carry this film, but he does!

There is plenty of nudity in this movie which I thought was overdone. I was plesantly suprised of hardly any profanity though. Kudoes to Verhoeven and Industrial Light and Magic for a classic.

First off I'm reviewing the movie and the dvd.

Movie: Ok a lot of you write this movie off as just some cheap rehash of aliens and in a way it is. But the beauty is that it works. You are entertained throughout the movie from beginning to end. The plot is simple highschool teenagers all really like each other forming a love triangle and when one wants to go to war they all go. O yeah theres evil bugs set out to kill us all. So basically you got goofy love scenes and lots of killing. What more do you need to ask. 4 1/2 stars

DVD: This is one great dvd. Not only is the picture clear and the audio superb but then we get audio commentaries from the cast and crew. Then we have nice menus, lots of trailers and documentaries. Its just really good! 5 stars

Overall its a goofy teenage killing flick that takes a stab at our government (watch the movie you'll understand) with a great dvd, making a great experience.

SummaryAbout Men & Bugs.
Content
Paul Verhoeven has become a very successful sci-fi film director after he moved to America. "Robocop" (1987), "Total Recall" (1990), "Starship Troopers" (1997) and "The Hollow Man" (2000) are there to testify this.

The present film is not "just" a sci-fi movie, even if it is a very good one for the genre and sci-fi lovers will enjoy it very much (as I did).
The approach chosen by Verhoeven is that of a caricature of an authoritarian Human society fighting an annihilation war against Bugs.
Aren't Bugs the perfect Enemy? YES, they may be exterminated, desecrated, demonized, whatever WITHOUT remorse.
But the not naïve viewer will bear in mind that in every major armed conflict the "enemy" will be metamorphosed little by little into a Bug.
At the same time the Human's military wardrobe is highly reminiscent of nazi uniforms.

I have read Heinlein's book but I will not compare the text with the movie. After reviewing movies for a while, is my conviction that they are a "kind" of art products that should stand by themselves, detached from their literary origin.

Aside from Verhoeven's approach, this is a very good sci-fi action film with great special effects and relentless rhythm.
The cast delivers fairly good acting pieces. Actors: Casper Van Dien as Rico, Neil P. Harris as Jenkins, Clancy Brown as Sergeant Zim (over par), Jake Busey as Levy and Michael Ironside as a perfect Lt. Rasczak.
Actress: Dina Mayer as Dizzy Flores very dynamic, athletic & sensual at the same time; Denise Richards as Carmen Ibanez is just lovely.
In supporting roles many good parts are delivered also.

Jost Vacano is the usual filmography director that collaborates with Verhoeven and they team well.

It is a good yet violent film. Sci-fi fans shouldn't miss it!
