Debbie Matenopoulos was born in Richmond, Virginia. If you were to look at
her birth certificate,it would say that a baby girl was born with the name
Thespina Matenopoulos on Friday the 13th at 3:13 am. The timing of her birth
alone seems to be a good indication that there would be something special about
this little girl.
Thespina was named after her grandmother who lived in Greece. Her parents
immigrated to the United States years earlier with two small children. The name
Thespina was Americanized to Debbie when she was a little girl. Along with
Debbie her parents also Americanized their names. Debbie's mom went from Froso
to Francis and her father went from Niko to Nick
Debbie realized that she wanted to be involved in the journalism/entertainment
world as a little girl. She began the first step of realizing that dream by
writing her own column in her high school newspaper. Then she got a job at as an
assistant at a local recording studio/production facility. As fate would have
it,this lead to the opportunity of doing voice-overs for radio.
Debbie attended the Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU Debbie realized she
wanted to go into broadcast journalism. She became involved with the colleges
radio station WVCW. Debbie was both a disc jokey and a program director for WVCW.
Debbie was able start her own radio program that involved issues for young
people. At the same time Debbie also got involved with the syndicated broadcast
company SupeRadio.
In 1994 Debbie decided and told her mother at their kitchen table that she
wanted to apply for an internship with MTV. Debbie applied, interviewed and
within a week was moving to New York City to begin her internship. While doing
her internship Debbie decided to make NYC her home and began going to New York
University. Her hardwork in the intern program landed Debbie a job as a
production assistand for MTV. Eventually, Debbie became a story cordinator for
MTV's "Unfiltered".
No one not even Debbie could have predicted what would happen to her next.
During her senior year at NYU Debbie decided to interview for this show called
The View. The View was a new talk show with Barbara Walters as one of the
executive producers. Debbie didn't even believe she had a chance to get this
first time ever in front of a camera gig but she did. For two years Debbie, sat
at a table with veterans Meredith Vieira and Barbara Walters, comedian Joy Behar
and TV attorney Star Jones.
Since The View Debbie has hosted her own series of streamline videos for
rockcity.com. Also, she became a coorespondent for Celebrity Death Match . Now
she also has made her home as a host for the TV Guide Channel. Inevitably this
bio will become longer as this talented woman not only dreams about life, but
also strives to make her dreams reality. May we all strive to make our dreams
reality right along with Debbie.
