I love this movie, it is hysterical. The characterizations are perfect. Even though it is based on fact, it never feels like an history lesson. If the use of the "F" word bothers you, this might not be the movie for you as it is used with regularity. On the other hand, if you just enjoy a rollicking good tale, with delightful characters, you will enjoy this one.

What can I add to all the glorious reviews this film has received? It is such a sweet, warm-hearted movie. As an Italian-American New Yorker, specifically one from Queens who was a youth during the 70's, I can so relate to this picture. Especially having an older brother too! It's definitely a cross between Goodfellas and It's A Wonderful Life. For the reviewer who wrote that the lead character is nothing like Jimmy Stewart from that movie, well of course he isn't. Nobody can be that innocent in 50 years time. Society grows up, becomes a little more cynical, more been-there done-that. So it's more of an updated version.

The narration throughout the movie from Frank Pesce Jr. is perfect. My favorite scene? When they go to the insurance company, and Pesce Jr. says "we look like a nice family going to pick up a check." Pesce Sr. says, "we look like a pack of wild dogs!" Absolutely priceless. Also the scene at the draft board. The scene at the end (everyone knows which one) makes my cry every time I watch it.

I had the fortune of meeting Lainie Kazan a few years back at Tony n' Tina's Wedding in New York. I shouted out how much I loved 29th Street, she heard me and came back to thank me. She said she loved being in that movie; and this was before she made My Big Fat Greek Wedding!

Although it wasn't filmed in New York, use of some landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge add a nice sense of being in NY. I recommend this movie to anyone with an ounce of Italian blood in them, or anyone else who just enjoys a very special feel-good movie. It's an old cliche, but you'll laugh you'll cry. And you'll wish you were a part of their family.
