 | The movie is great, as many others have said, but the DVD is strictly barebones - the movie trailer and a cast listing. I would love to see an "Addams Family/Addams Family Values" box set with a lot more features, like a behind-the-scenes on how they filmed Thing for example. My vague hope that this will come out someday is the only thing that keeps me from buying this version. |

 | If you liked the first ADDAMS FAMILY movie for the same reasons I did (see my review on that), then you will probably be scratching your head as to why this movie was even made, especially since this story could have easily been interpreted by any set of characters. For God knows what reason, the general consensus among critics is that it is much better than the first one. Not only is it not better, but it's not even good. It stinks. At best, it scrapes the bottom of the barrel. What is most appalling is how the first movie was a family movie, and this movie's sole audience is adults.
The sexual humor in the first film was more subtle. In this version, it is painfully overt, to the point that they weren't even funny when they were about Morticia and Gomez. Sexual jokes about Morticia and Gomez can be funny (and they were in the first movie), but when you use those jokes with any other Addams character, it becomes a perversion, and not even in a funny way. Just as we don't want to know or even contemplate what Pee-Wee Herman's sex life is like (if he has one), we don't want to think about what Uncle Fester's sex life is like. There was no subtlty here at all. It was all painfully overt. However, the entire film focused on it.
Uncle Fester gets married to a booby woman named Debbie, a black widow who kills husbands just so she can get their money (a poor rehash of the first film's basic plot). We see Uncle Fester and Debbie in bed together, something that we didn't even see with Gomez and Morticia. Fester is trying to figure out how to do IT. And Debbie tells him to disown his family because when she thinks about them, she cannot acheive... orgasm. (And he does reluctantly disown them... reluctantly, but too easily, I'm afraid) We later find out that the two have sex day in and day out (or at least it's implied). In the first film, Uncle Fester's naivety and confusion were funny and somewhat human, and in this they are overexploited in a stupid, boring, and unfunny way.
Morticia and Gomez have a new baby, and without Fester around, he becomes "normal." Debbie also sends the kids to summer camp so that they will be out of the way, and not suspecting. At the end, the family is reunited, only to be electrocuted by Debbie. She builds it up a little by first talking about why she became the way she did. She cites one reason as not getting a Barbie Doll that she wanted when she was a child. This scene goes on and on until you want to wretch.
But, of course, nobody gets killed-- except Debbie. Pubert rewires the electricity so that when Debbie flips the switch, she gets killed.
And, at the end, Fester is reunited with his family, and meets a new woman, Dementia, a better match. The movie would have been more interesting and funny if, had it been about Fester's love life, it had involved Dementia all along. A funnier and more (ironically) down to earth plot probably would have resulted.
There were a few funny lines, like Morticia saying "I'm going to have a baby-- right now", but for the most part there were no redeeming qualities about this movie.
