 | just like all john water's films, i adored this one. the script funny, unique, and sometimes over the top proved to be truly entertaining all the way to the end.
with unique and funny visuals, this movie is filled with eye candy. tracy ullman does a more than superb job as sylvia stickles, and makes the silly movie, almost seem believable!

| I hate giving this only 1 star, as I am a huge fan of Tracy Ullman, but this movie stunk. & since I'm the sort of person who laughs at everything, that's pretty bad. Concussions causing sex addiction? Please. The script was terrible, the acting turgid, & I stopped watching 1/2 thru the bloody thing.
Waste of time. Don't bother. |

| For those of you who think that John Water's has mellowed out way too much in recent years, get ready for a real goodun' ! ! !
Faced with the torment of having to have spent a lifetime trying to out-top the legendary dog turd eating scene in PINK FLAMINGOS (atleast in the eyes of the critics) as well as to continue to shock people in a world that's seen everything (including his films and Jerry Springer), another film director may have hung himself. Waters... well, he refined his film making skills no doubt, and after 15 or so years of doing films that actually bordered on heart warming began a slow about face with PECKER and CECIL B. DEMENTED... but they were just hints... A DIRTY SHAME is a throw back to the good old days of the CALVALCADE OF PERVERTS... only his skills as a film maker are better... his scriptwriting skills are totally overboard, and his tackling the ground he was born to do a film on... SEXUAL ADDICTION. - - Despite a somewhat disappointing ending (funny, but a bit too strange for me) this film has some of the most memorable dialogue of any of his films (*a spoof of lines right off of strange internet subcultures, '50s and 60's sexploitation, '70s porn), and scenes that you'll want to see over and over again... As an added bonus, the film features loads of guest appearences by actors who will be recognizable from many of his earlier films (I won't spoil it, but be sure to do your JW homework before watching this one.)
Incidentally, if you've never READ John Waters great memoirs or scene the documenatry on him (and aren't familiar what a great humorist/writer/storyteller he is), be sure to listen to his commentary and I'm sure you'll agree with me... John Water's is the WILL ROGERS of sleeze... and one of our generations most brilliant social satirist (yes, its not all shock... he does have a well thought up philosophy whether you agree with it all not) - - and you'll also learn some new slang. Further, I challenge anyone who can get past the ludricous dialogue to say that John Water's hasn't involved into a GREAT film director... no DORIS WISHMAN, a Woody Allen, and only people who would want to berate his anarchistic world view can try to belittle his skills as a filmaker.
By the way, the film has almost no sex... despite some nudity, I agree with the unfairness of the NC-17 rating. If you find ANY JW films erotically stimulating or want to emulate the charactors, you're probably suffering from a head injury... or from Baltimore. Porn's not the cause.

| KUDOS to people who make movies like this. Time for me to go back and absorb all John Waters movies now! Tracel Ullman is has gained legendary status in my opinion. History will remember this very sexual romp. |
