Fight for This Love

Background:

English singer, songwriter and television personality Cheryl Cole rose to fame as part of the girl group Girls Aloud, which was formed in 2002 as a result from ITV's “Popstars: The Rivals.” The group  had five platinum studio albums and achieved a string of twenty consecutive top ten singles in the UK, including four number ones. The top hit “The Promise” won the BRIT Award for Best British Single in 2009. Girls Aloud announced their break up in March 2013.

As a solo artist, Cheryl has released three studio albums. Her first two albums, “3 Words” (2009) and “Messy Little Raindrops” (2010), debuted on No. 1  on the UK Albums chart, while her third album “A Million Lights” (2012) reaching No. 2 on the same chart. They produced the No. 1 hit singles “Fight for This Love” (2009), “Promise This” and “Call My Name” (2012).

Cheryl also had gained popularity as the judge of the British version of “The X Factor” from 2008 to 2010. She left the show to judge the American version, but was soon fired.

Cheryl has become a recognized and photographed style icon. She has been appeared on the cover of British Vogue, Elle and Harper's Bazaar, and has become a new face of L'Oréal cosmetic. She was ranked No. 2 on the FHM list of “100 Sexiest Women 2005” and No. 7 on their “100 Sexiest 2008” list. She was selected as FHM's “Sexiest Women in the World supplement 2009.

Cheryl was married to footballer Ashley Cole from July 2006 to September 2010. After the divorce, she decided to continue to use her married name. Cheryl later dated dancer Tre Holloway, but they split up in June 2013 after being together for 14 months.

Childhood and Family:

Cheryl Cole was born Cheryl Ann Tweedy on June 30, 1983, in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, to parents Gary Tweedy and Joan Callaghan. Her parents were together for over ten years but never married one another. They split up when Cheryl was eleven years old. Cheryl has a sister and three brothers.

A very talented youth, Cheryl won the children's “World Star of Future Modeling” at age 6. She also won several other modeling contests, including the titles of Boots Group's “bonniest baby,” Mothercare's Happy Faces Portrait competition, “Best Looking Girl of Newcastle,” The Evening Chronicle's “Little Miss and Mister,” and “Most Attractive Girl” at the MetroCentre. In addition to several advert performances , young Cheryl also appeared in dance recitals on some television shows. She trained at the prestigious Royal Ballet Summer School in London.

Between 1994 to 1999, Cheryl attended Walker Comprehensive School in Newcastle. She left the school at age 16 with few qualifications. She then took a job as a waitress in a restaurant.

Cheryl began dating England footballer Ashley Cole in September 2004. They became engaged  in June 2005 and later tied the knot on July 15, 2006 in a ceremony at Barnet, North West London. On February 23, 2010, Cheryl announced that she and her husband were separating. She filed for divorce on May 26, 2010, citing unreasonable behavior. Her divorce was finalized on September 3 of that year.

Member of Girls Aloud

Career:

Cheryl Cole got her first big break in the entertainment business when she won an audition for the reality television show “Popstars The Rivals” in 2002. She then became a member of the girl group, Girls Aloud, along with Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh. The group's first single, “Sound of the Underground,” was released on December 16, 2002. It reached No. 1 in the UK chart and was eventually certified platinum by the BPI. A debut studio album of the same name was launched by Polydor Records on May 26, 2003 to mostly favorable reviews from contemporary music critics. It reached No. 2 on the UK Album chart and went platinum by selling over  368,000 in the UK.

Cheryl continued to enjoy success with her music group. Their follow up albums: “What Will the Neighbours Say?” (2004), “Chemistry” (2005), “Tangled Up” (2007) and “Out of Control” (2008), all achieved platinum certification in the UK, with the latter also marking the group's first No. 1 album. Girls Aloud also produced three additional No. 1 hit singles with “I'll Stand by You” (2004), “Walk This Way” (2007) and “The Promise” (2009) as well as a number of top 10 hits between 2003 and 2012. Girls Aloud won the BRIT Award for Best British Single in 2009 for their song “The Promise.”

Thanks to the popularity she gained with Girls Aloud, Cheryl was chosen to replace Sharon Osbourne as a judge for the fifth series of “The X Factor” UK in 2008. She was given the girls category and went on to emerge as the winning judge when Alexandra Burke became the fifth winner of the show on December 13, 2008. When she return for the sixth season in 2009, Cheryl guided the boys category and ended up as the winning judge for a second consecutive year after Joe McElderry was crowned the winner of the sixth series.

In 2009, while Girls Aloud was on a hiatus, Cheryl started her solo career by releasing her first solo studio album “3 Words” on October 26 through Fascination/Polydor Records. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums chart and has since been certified triple platinum by BPI. It spawned three successful singles: “Fight for This Love,” “3 Words” (featuring will.i.am) and “Parachute,” which charted at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 on the UK Singles charts, respectively.

In late 2009, Cheryl starred on a one-off television special called “Cheryl Cole's Night In,” which aired on ITV on December 12 of that year. Hosted by Holly Willoughby, the show featured music and interviews with Cheryl and some of her favorite performers, including Alexandra Burke, Rihanna, Will Young, Snow Patrol and will.i.am.

Cheryl released her sophomore solo effort “Messy Little Raindrops” on October 29, 2010.  The album became her second solo album to debut at the No. 1  position on the UK Albums chart and was certified platinum in both the UK and Ireland. The lead single “Promise This” became her second No. 1 hit in the UK.

Also in 2010, Cheryl made her return to television as a judge on the seventh series of “The X Factor,” opposite Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue. She mentored the girls category once again, but failed to become the victorious judge for a third time after a contestant in her category, Rebecca Ferguson, lost out to Minogue's  Matt Cardle.

In May 2011, Cheryl officially joined Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid, and Paula Abdul on the judging panel for the American version of “The X Factor.” After only three weeks as a judge and concluding the auditions in Los Angeles, she, however, left the show and was replaced by Nicole Scherzinger for the rest of season 1. The same year, Cheryl did not return to the UK version and was replaced by Tulisa Contostavlos on the judging panel.

Cheryl's third studio album, “A Million Lights,” was released on June 18, 2012. The album debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums chart and only received gold certification in the UK. The first single “Call My Name” marked her third No. 1 single on the UK Singles chart. The follow up “Under the Sun” failed to achieve the top 10 on the UK Singles chart and only reached No. 13. She supported the album by embarking on her first solo concert tour, the A Million Lights Tour, which lasted from October 3 to 17, 2012.

Later that same year in November, Cheryl reunited with Girls Aloud and released their new single, “ Something New,” on November 18, 2012. The song, which was the official charity single for Children in Need, reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. The group released their second greatest hits compilation, “Ten,” on November 26, 2012. The second single “Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me” reached No. 97 on the UK Singles chart.

In 2013, Cheryl and Girls Aloud embarked on “Ten: The Hits Tour,” the group's first tour in four years. After the tour ended in March 2013, Girls Aloud announced their split.

In September 2013, it was reported that Cheryl may join forces with Girls Aloud member Nicola Roberts on her upcoming solo album, which is scheduled to be released in 2014.
