SummaryMore Of A Charlie Sheen Movie Than A Clint Eastwood Movie.
Content
The Rookie, while fairly entertaining overall, is somewhat uneven, and features a flawed script (and even more flawed casting).

Eastwood plays Nick Pulovski, an undercover auto theft cop who is a career underachiever. While there is a thread of a real, interesting character there, Clint Eastwood seems to be going through the motions for most of this movie. His partner,(The Rookie of the title) Charlie Sheen is really given the bulk of the movie to carry, as he gets more screen time than Eastwood. Sheen, for his part, can be very good in an ensemble cast, but his track record has been uneven when he has to carry a movie himself. That the movie is Sheen's to carry is very evident once Eastwood's character is captured by the villainous Raul Julia. At that point Eastwood is no longer driving the story - he becomes a plot device (the hostage). Sheen has to drive the story from there, and he does a decent job. Unfortunately, he is let down by a script that is just barely passable. What keeps the movie going are some spectacular action sequences, and that is where The Rookie shines.

Where the movie doesn't shine is in the casting, or MIS-casting of Raul Julia as the German(!) head of a stolen car ring. His accent fluctuates between Spanish and German throughout the movie, and if it wasn't for the character's name and the occasional reference to his being German you could be excused for thinking that the character was supposed to have some kind of Spanish or Hispanic origin. It's almost as if the producers made the character German as a way to avoid the "stereotyping" of Hispanics as car thieves - without recasting the part! This miscasting becomes a serious liability to the movie as the viewer is taken out of the story and starts noticing things like, "Raul Julia doesn't LOOK German," and "Raul Julia doesn't SOUND German," or even, "Raul Julia is just HORRIBLE trying to play a German." (And I don't blame Julia, I blame the producers for the miscasting.) This may have been one part that he regretted taking. It certainly doesn't show the considerable acting talents that he had.

Still, The Rookie, for all its flaws, is a fairly entertaining "buddy" cop movie in line with the Lethal Weapon movies (and actually better than one or two of those). The action sequences are very good, and the story is told at a brisk pace. Not a bad rental or even a purchase IF the price is right and you have realistic expectations.

SummaryClassic Clint!
Content
This is Clint Eastwood's best movie of all-time. He does a great job playing Nick Polavski, a veteran police officer with a real mean streak against evil. Charlie Sheen starts off as a push over who's not taken seriously then turns into a raging bad ass out to save Polavski from his captors. The part when he redeems himself at the bar where he gets pushed around was one of the best parts in the movie. The late Raul Julia did an excellent job in playing the evil and clever Strom and wow even though Sonia Braga was Strom's side kick, she looked stunning. This is a classic Clint Eastwood action movie and my favorite movie of his. I might be biast but this is such a great movie. Don't miss it!

SummaryFORMULAIC BUT WATCHABLE COP THRILLER
Content
Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen make strange co-cops, the chemistry was there but not quite. The Rookie is full of formula action cliches with plot holes so large you could drive a stolen SUV through them. The saving grace: a funny grizzled performance by Clint Eastwood. If you can digest the first 15 minutes and not think too hard about it, "The Rookie" is actually quite a watchable movie with some pretty nifty explosions, escapes and chases. You know, the works.

SummaryAnother Eastwood Goody!!! And Sheen Was Good Too!!!
Content
When two policemen move in on car thieves, one of them gets killed. And the fallen officer isn't just a partner, he's a friend. Now it's PERSONAL!!! Clint Eastwood plays Nick Pulovski the surviving partner, who makes it a point to try and find the hoodlums. Of course Clint plays a rough and tumble policeman like in his Dirty Harry roles, but in this movie, he does show a more down to earth side, lighter side. There's a terrific car chase involving Clint and when it's over, it's rather comical.
Nick gets a new partner David Ackerman (played by Charlie Sheen) who looks more like an insurance salesman than a policeman, mainly because he's from the side of town where you learn early in life where to put your fork and knife on the table.
With this new partner, the two head out to try and find the thieves. The head goon is played by none other than Raul Julia. I must admit, when I first spotted Raul playing that of a villain, I didn't think he'd fit the role, but after seeing the entire movie, I'd say he done a terrific job at it!
The big question is Will Nick and David get their man? Well, of course I'm not going to say, but I will say that if you like movies with just the right amount of action, plus an equal helping of suspense, intrique, drama, and a light seasoning of comedy, you'll be sure to love this entertaining film.
It's the perfect movie meal.
