Victoria’s Secret Angel
“80 percent of the time I'm on some beautiful island in a bikini. But I'm working and everybody else is on their honeymoon!” Alessandra Ambrosio
Kicking off her modeling career after winning Brazil's Elite Model Look, Alessandra Ambrosio rose to fame as a Guess Girl for the company's fall Millennium campaign in 2000. She has since walked the catwalks for big names like Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and done countless advertisements for top brands like Gucci, GAP, Rolex and Revlon. Her face has also decorated the covers of many magazines, including “Glamour,” “Elle” and Vogue.” One of the top-earning models in the world, Ambrosio has enjoyed even bigger triumphs thanks to her affiliation with Victoria's Secret. A regular associate in the “Victoria's Secret Fashion Show” since 2001, she turned heads in 2005 when she walked down the runway wearing lingerie made completely out of candy. The first spokesperson for the brand's Pink line, Ambrosio said, “It's amazing. In the last 3 years I have been top the most beautiful places in the world and got to work with wonderful people. It's like a family with the other Angels and the crew.”
Ambrosio has been named one of Maxim's “Hot 100,” one of FHM's “100 Sexiest Women in the World” and one of Forbes Magazine's “The World's Top-Earning Supermodels” (all 2007). She ranked No. 6 on the AskMen.com list of “Top 99 Women of 2009.”
Apart from modeling work, Ambrosio is also the National Ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Ambrosio enjoys surfing, rollerblading, snowboarding and inline skating. She plays volleyball and has an interest in skydiving. A devoted coffee drinker, she drinks up to five cups of coffee a day and says Brazilian coffee has a stronger taste than American coffee. Ambrosio is a fan of “The Lord Of The Rings” books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Among her other favorites are Khaled Hosseini's “The Kite Runner” and the books of world-renowned Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho.
Currently, Ambrosio is in relationship with California businessman Jamie Mazur, with whom she has a daughter (born in 2008). She is best friends with fellow Brazilian supermodel Ana Beatriz Barros.
Childhood and Family:
Alessandra Corine Ambrósio was born on April 11, 1981, in Erexim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to parents who are of Italian and Polish heritage. They own a gas station. After seeing a picture of popular cover girl Karen Mulder in a magazine, 8 year old Alessandra, known to family and close friends by the nickname Ale, wanted to pursue a career in modeling. When she was 11 years old, Ale underwent cosmetic surgery to pin her ears back. She suffered with complications from the operation for two years.
The oldest of two daughters, Ale has a younger sister named Aline Ambrósio. She is an attorney in New York City.
On August, 24, 2008, Ale welcomed a baby girl, Anja Louise Ambrosio Mazur, who was fathered by her boyfriend Jaime Mazur.
“When I was 14 and 15, I was super-skinny. I did a lot of runway shows then. But I love food and I don't like doing runway shows. It's a reward not to have to.” Alessandra Ambrosio
Alessandra Ambrosio knew that she wanted to become a model at age 8. To fulfill her dream, she enrolled in a modeling course four years later and within three years, she had won the Brazilian Elite Model Look of the Year Contest. Led by the win, she appeared in the Millennium GUESS campaign alongside fellow Brazilian model and personal friend Ana Beatriz Barros. It was a high-profile assignment that transformed Ambrosio into an overnight sensation.
Ambrosio was soon seen strutting down the catwalks for top designers like Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Nanette Lepore, Christian Lacroix, Oscar de la Renta, Laura Biagiotti, Vivienne Tam, Kenzo and Vivienne Westwood, to name a few. She also appeared in many advertisements for noted clients such as Revlon, Gucci, GAP, Rolex, Manos del Uruguay, Hummer, Armani Exchange, Macy's and others, and graced the covers of numerous international publications, including “Cosmopolitan,” “Elle,” “GQ,” “Harper's Bazaar,” “Marie Claire,” “Vogue,” “Glamour” and “Ocean Drive.”
The brown-eyed beauty, however, is probably most celebrated for her work with America's prestigious lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. First appearing in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2001, she has since become a regular participant in the shows and in 2004, she was chosen as the first spokesmodel for the brand's largely popular PINK line. Currently, Ambrosio is one of Victoria's Secret Angels, alongside Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Miranda Kerr, Karolína Kurková, Selita Ebanks, Marisa Miller and Yasmeen Ghauri.
Her successful modeling career has led to several TV appearances. Ambrosio was a guest on talk shows like “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” (2004), “The Tyra Banks Show” (2005 and 2006) and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” (2006) and served as a guest judge on the reality series “Project Runway Season 2: Team Lingerie” (2005). She also made a cameo appearance as herself on the HBO series “Entourage” (2007), opposite Angle Izabel Goulart. The same year, she joined Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks, Marisa Miller, Miranda Kerr, and Heidi Klum to guest star in an episode of “How I Met Your Mother” called “The Yips.” On the big screen, Ambrosio appeared as a tennis girl on the James Bond movie “Casino Royale,” starring Daniel Craig as 007.
