 | A down on his luck ex-bowler tries to precariously attain his former greatness by mentoring an Amish fellah with natural ability for 10-pin. That is the basic story line for KINGPIN. It is a film that came highly recommended to me. But, the movie that arrived only succeeded in under whelming me. Sure, expectations where high.
There are a lot of small laughs. A lot. We never see any of the subtler, lasting humor that makes up better film comedies, just sophomoric jokes of the bodily fluid variety.
The slim "storyline" follows a down-on-his-luck former bowling champ and his Amish prot??g??'. But, that is all irrelevant. No storyline is even needed for this. It's about the extreme jokes.
After all the hype, I found the greatest flaws in the film to be ridiculous performances by Randy Quaid and Woody Harrelson. They at times are miscast... or out of their league. BILL MURRAY is the exception in his role as a sleazy bowling champ and the film brightens when he is on, but he is not on screen often enough.
KINGPIN can do exceptionally well with a very narrow audience base. But, I don't think this flick is going to make the "Bowling Film" a new Hollywood staple. Spare me.

 | I sae this one when I was six years old. Of cours I didn't understand then, but I laughed my ass off. Now I rented it two days before Christmas last year and I understood more and laughed even harder than the last time I've seen wich was seven years ago. I love this one. I'm not gonna tell you the plot about this one either, but I strongly suggest you watch this one right now. This is the best FARRELY'S BROTHER movie along with "There's Something About Mary". I love this two. I'm not that much of a "Dumb And Dumber" fan.
I think you should purchase or rent this one. It is simply one of the best comedies of the century and the best perfomance by Woody Harelson. I think I am gonna watch it again right now. If you want to do the same, then I'm with you. |

OK, i really like the movies, great dumb comedies are a fun "turn off your mind" thing for me but im writing this because someone needs to tell the Farelly brothers that their commentary tracks are awfull! They spend the whole time naming all their friends they put in the movie....i mean....THE WHOLE TIME!! Apparently they put all their friends in everyone of their movies (they did the same thing in "...Mary") But why do we the viewers have to hear them rattle off their names the whole time, "there's Bill Johnson a lawyer from Duluth, and that's Bill Anderson our High School gym teacher..." it's non-stop! (im sure their friends appreciate it so why not make two versions of the dvd, one for your frineds and one for the rest of us where you discuss the film...) The movie gets four stars and minus 1 star for the commentary, oh yeah, they threw in a couple deleted scenes in the film which was cool, you can tell they're deleted because it's the only time the brothers stop name-dropping their buddies |

 | This movie is worth seeing. It has an uplifting plot with a lot of humor. What I find ridiculous in some of these reviews is how people can say the humor is disgusting and then say, "but I love Dumb and Dumber, South Park". Huh? Since when is comedy sanitized? Not everyone's a fan of the America's Funniest Videos type of sappy comedy. |

 | I'm not a huge fan of Farrelly brother movies because, as a rule, I don't really go in for gross-out humor. But when I saw "Kingpin", I even considered trying "Dumb and Dumber" again to give these wonderful men another chance. "Kingpin" is very similar to the pair's other movies in that there is indeed some disgusting humor, but unlike other efforts such as "There's Something About Mary", there is an actual story here, with a plot, character development, and even a fair amount of heart. |
