SummaryOne of my all time favorite movies
Content
Growing up, my friends would come by and we would say the lines before Bill Murray, wait for him to say them and then laugh endlessly. My mother just couldn't figure us out. You can't see Stripes too many times. If I had to pick one comedy to keep in my collection it would either be Stripes or Monty Python & the Holy Grail. I chose not to pick.

SummaryMaking a classic even better
Content
"Stripes" has always been one of my favorite movies and within a few minutes of popping in this disc, I knew I was in for a treat. The picture and sound quality blow away any previous video version I've seen of this film.
You can watch the film in the theatrical version or with newly-restored scenes (you can also see these scenes separately). The new scenes, while not always necessary, are fun and do add to character development. And heck, it's just fun watching Bill Murray do his thing.
Other extras include an entertaining commentary, and an excellent "making of" feature with interviews with many of the major players in the movie. I think the documentary is worth the price of the disc on its own.
I still laugh as hard at "Stripes" as I did the first time I saw it. There are so many classic scenes and lines. And I plan on watching this disc many, many times.

SummaryCould have done better . . .
Content
For such an outstanding comedy, this "Extended Cut" re-release of Stripes falls far short of what it could be. The video is very grainy, at best and is somewhat of a painstaking endeavour to watch, given the high degree of technology we have today. The video on this DVD should have been digitally restored and the soundtrack flawless. Why are the movie studios so leary of putting out the best they can do? After all, if this is a reflection of the type of work they can put out then most production studios are taking a giant leap backwards.

The movie is a classic--if the video and audio digital transfers would have been better I would have given five stars instead of the three.

Insist on the highest quality possible!!!

SummaryA fitting DVD presentation of a great comedy
Content
The mark of a great comedy is that it remains funny after numerous viewings. "Stripes" (the 1981 release that helped make Bill Murray a star) passes this litmus test with flying colors. Now at last there is a DVD release, replete with extras, worthy of this enduring comedy.
Ivan Reitman directed Murray, Harold Ramis (who has subsequently directed many comedies of his own) and a great supporting cast led by John Candy as new recruits in the U.S. Army.
The wonderful veteran actor Warren Oates, who died shortly after the film's release, is their tough-as-nails drill sergeant. The by-play between Murray and Oates (opposites don't always attract) is priceless.
Suffice it to say that hilarity ensues, with the improbable unit putting on a virtuoso performance at their graduation ceremony ("That's the fact Jack!) sans their injured sergeant. This leads to them being charged with the security of a new super weaponized mobile home (it's called an, "urban assault vehicle") in Europe. Improbable? Absolutely. Hilarious? Most definitely.
Murray and Ramis also each has a lovely MP to accompany him on the duo's escapades as the ribaldry doesn't stop until the closing credits.
You can watch the "Stripes" with deleted scenes included or without.
The obvious highlight of the DVD extras is an hour long documentary on the movie with all principles interviewed (at his insistence, Murray's interview is done in black light). It is one of the better retrospectives of its kind.
And "Stripes" is one of the best comedies of this or any other time.

SummaryBILL MURRAY CLASSIC FLAWED BY CORPORATE IDIOCY
Content
Who was the idiot man-child that thought it necessary to place on-screen notifications throughout the extended version of the Stripes DVD? Nowhere on the packaging does it state that the new scenes would include on-screen alerts for people too stupid to realize they're watching a newly added scene. Even more ridiculous is the fact that the DVD includes both the original and extended versions, so ANYONE who wanted to know which scenes were new could simply WATCH BOTH VERSIONS. Anyone out there familiar with the DVD Lord of the Rings Trilogy? The DVDs include HOURS of additional footage. Imagine how silly it would have been to have on-screen announcements like "BONUS SCENE BEGINS!" with each additional scene? That's kind of like what your new version of Stripes is like. Classic movie ruined by Sony's idiot executives who have decided that its viewing audience needs a hammer hit on the head to enjoy the extended cut. The extended scenes are, nonetheless, awesome, even if the video and audio quality of the new scenes is subpar. But this DVD is worth seeing for the new scenes alone. Bottom line: Would be five stars as this is a classic comedy; but this great extended film is flawed by corporate idiocy, so three stars at best.
