 | When Rob Zombie's first directorial debut began with "House of 1000 Corpses" in the spring of 2003, it proved to be quite the shocker of our time since "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", despite the fact that some were left feeling a bit disappointed. However, he made a very big comeback with the follow-up, "The Devil's Rejects", which proves to be even better than its predecessor! Originally set for a November 2004 release, the date was moved up a bit all the way to July 22nd. Nevertheless, as many fans might've wondered, the wait was definately worth it! Unlike the original film, 'Rejects' delivers plenty of thrills, gore, and [at times] laughs! Of course, it's also more entertaining and the plot is even better than that of the first film!
Starting where 'Corpses' left off, one year has passed since the murder of Sheriff George Wydell and a group of innocent teenagers... After an intense shootout with the police at the Firefly residence, the family escapes and travels across the country where their bloody carnage continues! Now, vigilante officer John Wydell wants revenge for the death of his brother! With the help of two professional hitmen known as 'The Unholy Two', Wydell will have to put an end to the Firefly's reign of terror once and for all!
Personally, I thought that this was one of the BEST modern day horror flicks of all time and when compared to the other ones made today, there are absolutely NO limits and nothing is left out! In addition, the film itself, actually seems to refer back to the good ol' shock cinema flicks of the 70s and early 80s that most other studios won't dare show us anymore (Which is really too bad) and it's nice to see another after such a long time! All of the original cast are still there, including Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding, Bill Moseley as Otis, Sheri Moon [Zombie] as baby, and Leslie Easterbrook as Mother Firefly. There's even a new face to the set, William Forsythe who does an excellent job at portraying the role of Sheriff John Wydell!
But be warned: this movie is NOT for everyone! There is a very sick rape scene in the beginning and an extremely violent torture sequence near the end! Minors especially (e.g. young children) should NOT see this, unless they have a strong stomach to do so! Remember, this is a good movie, but it does still have its shocking moments! RATING: 10/10. Can't wait for the DVD release!

 | While The Devil's Rejects wasn't exactly what I was expecting, this turned out to be a positive thing. The cinematography shows a marked improvement over its predecessor House of 1,000 Corpses, but retains the same constantly gory sense of humor and sick fun. For example, the "horny robots" scene, the chicken-buying scene (Won't give that away, it's a major comedic highlight!), and some death scenes that were so over the top and fun that the entire theater laughed at the gory humor of it.
While House was more of a sendoff of classic seventies horror like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Rejects has a much more ultraviolent Sam Peckinpah/Sergio Leone movie feel. The desolate landscape of the southwest lends it a desperate raw outlaw feel.
The movie begins with the Firefly family fighting off the police after their grisly crimes have been discovered. The sheriff (William Forsythe) is taking this capture personally, as the Fireflys tortured and killed his brother. As he chases the Fireflys across the southwest, he spirals into homicidal madness and an all-encompassing obsession with revenge.
There are scads of interesting and unusual death and torture scenes throughout the movie, which should satisfy straight horror fans; however, this is not a straightforward Corpses-style slasher flick. While it's not up to the quality of Peckinpah's films, the similarity in style is quite beautiful and shows a lot of promise as far as Rob Zombie's developing style.
Sid Haig fans will love the fact that he gets significantly more screen time in Rejects, and the entire Firefly family dynamic is explored a bit more. Bill Mosely as Otis has toned down quite a bit, and it is interesting to see how the characters have changed and developed with their situation rather than remaining stagnant.
On the negative side, some aspects of the plot seem a bit shoddy and occasionally contrived. Although Mama Firefly's character is meant to be somewhat over-the-top (all the characters are!), Leslie Easterbrook at times takes it a bit too far and makes the character slightly annoying. She does do a fairly acceptable impression of Karen Black's speaking style, but would have done well to tone it down a bit and stay closer to the original character. It is interesting to watch Zombie's style develop over the course of his movies, but some of his stylistic gimmicks get a little repetitive and lose their power after awhile.
Cult movie fans will be delighted to see numerous old favorites in the supporting cast, including Michael Berryman, Ken Foree, PJ Soles, Danny Trejo, Steve Railsback, and others.
The soundtrack is amazing in an old-fashioned road movie sort of way, and as always contributes to that lovely sick sense of humor we've come to expect from Zombie. Songs that I wouldn't normally like are set to the scenes in such a psychotic way I couldn't help but love them. Who else but Rob Zombie would set a massacre scene to Freebird? |

 | The Devils Rejects by far surpasses House of a Thousand Corpses. The Story, production, and overall movie was better. I've seen it twice already. I wont reveal anything in the review and I suggest everyone go see it. |

 | Devil's is a better movie than the first. It's not as horror as House of 1000 Corpses, instead its more of Natural Born Killers. There's more of a plot and less disturbing imagery. I guess revenge isnt that disturbing. |
