Background:

American actress Ariel Winter is most popular to television audiences for playing Alex Dunphy on the television sitcom “Modern Family” (2009-?), for which she, together with the rest of the show's cast, won four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series and also shared (with Rico Rodriguez and Nolan Gould) a Young Artist Award for Outstanding Young Performers in a TV Series. Winter also had a recurring role as Lucy Moore on “ER” (2009), and voiced Gretchen in “Phineas and Ferb” (2013) and Sofia in “Sofia the First” (2013-2014).

Winter has a purple belt in Taekwondo. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her three dogs: Pebbles, Hercules and Cher, and going to the movies with her friends. She is involved in environmental charities to promote a greener living.

Childhood and Family:

Ariel Winter Workman was born on  January 28, 1998, in Fairfax, Virginia, to parents Chrisoula 'Chrystal' (née Batistas) and Glenn Workman. Her maternal grandparents, James Batistas and Helen G. (Aronis), both emigrated from Greece. Ariel has an older sister, Shanelle Workman, and an older brother, Jimmy Workman, both are actors.

Career:

Ariel Winter entered the entertainment industry at age 6 when she appeared in a Cool Whip commercial. The following year, she had her first television role in an episode of “ Listen Up” called “Last Vegas,” aired on April 25, 2005. She made her feature film debut opposite Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan in the crime/comedy series “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (2005), where she played Harmony Faith Lane - age 7. The same year, she also had an uncredited part in an episode of “Freddie” and appeared as Pipoca in the TV series “Tickle U.”  

In 2006, Winter portrayed little Tori on “So Notorious,” a television sitcom starring, and loosely based on the life, actress Tori Spelling. The show ran on VH1 from April 2 to May 14, 2006. She could also be seen making guest appearances on “Monk,” “Bones” and “Nip/Tuck,” and also played Dolly in the film “Grilled” (all 2006). The same year, her voice could be heard in the animated films “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Over the Hedge,” “Bambi II” and “Curious George.”

Winter began landing her voice to the television cartoon series “Phineas and Ferb” in 2007. She went on to guest starred in many TV shows like “All of Us,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Criminal Minds” (all 2007), “Ghost Whisperer” (2008) before she had a recurring role as Lucy Moore on the medical series “ER” (5 episodes; 2009). Her film credits during 2008-2009 were “One Missed Call,” “Horton Hears a Who!” (additional voice), “Speed Racer,” “Afro Samurai: Resurrection” (TV), “Life Is Hot in Cracktown,” “Duress,” “Life Is Hot in Cracktown,” “Opposite Day,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” (voice) and “Tales from the Catholic Church of Elvis!.”

Winter's big break arrived when she won the role of Alex, a nerdy, smart middle child, on “Modern Family,” a television sitcom that premiered on ABC on September 23, 2009. The show has since been a success, and it was renewed for its sixth season on May 8, 2014. In 2010, Winter received a Young Artist Award for Outstanding Young Performers in a TV Series, which she shared with Rico Rodriguez and Nolan Gould. With the series's co-stars, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for  Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for four consecutive years from 2011 to 2014. She also was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in the category of Choice TV: Female Scene Stealer in 2013, for her work on the series.

Winter kept on busy taking other acting jobs and voice overs while maintaining her stint on “Modern Family.” She appeared in the films “Killers” (2010), “Nic & Tristan Go Mega Dega” (2010), “The Chaperone” (2011), where she received a Young Artist nomination for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actress for her portrayal of Triple H's daughter, “Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred” (2011, TV), “Excision” (2012) and “A Thousand Words” (2012). Winter lent her voice in various animated productions, including “ParaNorman” (2012), “Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess” (2012), “CollegeHumor Originals” (2012-2013), “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2” (2013) and “Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright” (2013). She provided the voice of Sofia in the American-British-Spanish-French computer-animated television series “Sofia the First,” which debuted on January 11, 2013 on Disney Channel. She also played Marina the Mermaid on the Annie Award-winning musical and interactive animated television series “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” which premiered on February 14, 2011 on Disney Junior.

In 2014, Winter portrayed Penny Peterson, Mr. & Mrs. Peterson's daughter and Sherman's classmate, on the 3D computer-animated comic science fiction film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” directed by Rob Minkoff.

Winter will play Kate in “Safelight” (2014), a drama film written and directed by Tony Aloupis.
