Actress, singer and songwriter Amanda Michalka is famous as part of the American pop rock duo 78violet (formerly Aly & AJ) with her older sister Alyson 'Aly' Michalka. Their debut album, “Into the Rush” (2005), received gold certification from RIAA. Their sophomore effort, “Insomniatic” (2007), is notable for producing “Potential Breakup Song,” their most successful single to date. The song rose to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by RIAA for selling over 1 million units. They also had a holiday album titled “Acoustic Hearts of Winter” (2006), provided soundtracks for several films and toured extensively since 2005. The younger Michalka has acted in several TV series, such as “The Guardian” (2002-2004, as Shannon Gressler), “Oliver Beene” (as Bonnie, 2003-2004), “General Hospital” (2004) and “Six Feet Under” (2004, as Ashley). Her film credits include “Cow Belles” (2006, TV), “Super Sweet 16: The Movie” (2007) and “The Lovely Bones” (2009).
Michalka is in a relationship with Joe Jonas (born on August 15, 1989) from the band the Jonas Brothers. They began dating in 2006 and she wrote the song “Something More” about their relationship.

Amanda Joy Michalka was born on April 10, 1991, in Torrance, California, to Mark Michalka and Carrie Begley. Her mother is a former cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders. She has an older sister named Alyson Renae Michalka (born on March 25, 1989), who is also an actress and her band mate in the duo 78violet. They are of German ancestry.
Nicknamed A.J., Amanda began playing piano at age 4 and later added guitar to her endeavors. She began performing in church play productions when she was 7 years old and decided to study the craft seriously two years later. She was home schooled.
Amanda loves horseback riding, mountain biking and hanging out with her family and three dogs (Roadie, Bandit and Willow). Other hobbies include cooking, dance and reading.

Amanda Michalka began her career as a model when she appeared in ads for magazines, store posters and other merchandising for Disney, Playmates Toys, Mattel, American Girl, and Zutopia, among other clients. She branched out to acting in 2002 when she appeared as Sheridan's daughter in an episode of the NBC series “Passions.” She then appeared in the David Hollander created drama “The Guardian,” which ran from September 2001 to May 2004 on CBS. In the series, she portrayed Shannon Gressler from September 2002 to March 2004. In October 2002, she appeared as Young Dinah in the premiere episode of The WB's short lived series “Birds of Prey.” From March 2003 to June 2004, Michalka had the recurring role of Bonnie in the Fox situation comedy “Oliver Beene,” which starred Grant Rosenmeyer. On August 16, 2005, musically talented Michalka joined forces with her older sister, Aly Michalka, to launch the debut album “Into the Rush” as Aly &AJ. Released on Hollywood Records, the album rose to No. 36 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by RIAA in March 2006 for selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S. The two enjoyed their first mainstream single with “Rush,” which peaked at No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 44 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 (Pop Songs) chart. They co-wrote the single with Leah Haywood and Daniel James. Their single “Chemicals React” rose to No. 50 and No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Mainstream Top 40 (Pop Songs), respectively. Other singles released from the album included a cover of John Sebastian's “Do You Believe in Magic” (#23 in Canada), which was used in the soundtrack of the Disney Channel movie “Now You See It...” (2005), which starred sister Aly, the acoustic song “No One,” which was used for Walt Disney Pictures film “Ice Princess,” “Walking on Sunshine,” “Never Far Behind” (#28 US Christian), “On the Ride,” “Shine” and “Something More.”
Aly &AJ released the Christmas album “Acoustic Hearts of Winter” on September 6, 2006. The album went to No. 78 on the Billboard 200 and made the Top 20 on the U.S. Holiday chart. It yielded one single with “Greatest Time of Year,” which rose to No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No.72 on the Mainstream Top 40 (Pop Songs). The song was used for the motion picture “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause,” which starred Tim Allen. The album was well received by critics.
Also in 2006, Michalka costarred with her sister in the Disney Channel film “Haversham Hall,” which was directed by Dennie Gordon. In the movie, she played Sam Tillar. They were reunited in another Disney Channel movie called “Cow Belles,” which was directed by Francine McDougall.
Michalka and her sister released their second studio album, “Insomniatic,” on July 10, 2007. It made the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 (#15). The album also charted at No. 72 in U.K. and No. 90 in Japan. The lead single, “Potential Breakup Song” (2007), rose to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became their first platinum single in the U.S. Released in January 2008, the single “Like Whoa” peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 47 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. It was their third gold single after “Rush” and “Chemicals React” and also their last single before they changed their name to 78violet in 2009. The song appeared on the soundtrack of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” (2008). Still in 2007, Michalka also starred as Sarah in the MTV television film “Super Sweet 16: The Movie,” opposite Regine Nehy and her sister.
In 2009, Michalka portrayed Clarissa in the Peter Jackson movie “The Lovely Bones,” opposite Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz. The film earned mixed reviews from critics and grossed over $93 million worldwide against its production budget of $65 million. The same year, Michalka and her sister recorded the song “Lovesick” for the film “Bandslam,” which starred Aly.
Recently, in 2010, Michalka completed filming “Slow Moe” and “Secretariat” (as Kate Tweedy). She will costar with Diana Lane, Penny Chenery, John Malkovich, Kevin Connolly, Scott Glenn and James Cromwell in the latter film, which is slated for an October 2010 release.
