 | By now you should already know... this isn't a love story. This is what happens when your student falls madly in love with a teacher, doing anything to prove how mad she is. I had a crush for a girl before, and if any of you have you'll be able to relate to the unexplainable passion they show in The Crush.
For having a no name director, and a cast at that time who were all at the beginning of their careers. This movie did quite excellent for a little thriller. This movie was continuing the huge success of lady killer thrillers. Such as Fatal Attraction(Glenn Close), Misery(Kathy Bates), Basic Instinct(Sharon Stone), Single White Female(Bridget Fonda), and Poison Ivy(Drew Barrymore).
Alicia Silverstone is scary as the badguy in her film debut. Playing the sweet sounding student who's also highly seductive. Silverstone went on to make bigger films such as the highschool blonde hottie in Clueless(Brittany Murphy), and playing Batgirl in Batman and Robin(Georrge Clooney). Cary Elwes as the gentleman-like teacher was nice finished in The Crush, starting up his career also. Going on to be in other murder thrillers such as Kiss The Girls(Ashley Judd), and Saw(Danny Glover). For the rest of the supporting cast, it gets pretty slim.
The action in this movie is mildly slow. The plot slowly builds up and builds up, when finally you already can see a pridictable plot. The story and acting I thought was convincing the whole way still.
This movie is probably the lowest out of all of the movies I listed above. Both of these actors are also dropping out of the film stars today. However, this is a pretty good love story gone crazy that is worth the bucks. I'd rent it first, and think of buying it later... it's only going for $10 dollars everywhere. Either way watch it, you won't lose anything. |

 | If it weren't for a couple shots of bare behinds (Elwes and Silverstone), THE CRUSH is almost like an Afternoon Special for Warped Kiddies. In her film debut, Alicia Silverstone pouts and pours on the sexual charm as 14 year old Adrian, a girl who finds herself with a "crush" on Cary Elwes, who plays Nick, an up and coming journalist who has his own "crush" on partner Jennifer Rubin. Of course, if you've seen FATAL ATTRACTION or SWIMFAN, you know where this one's heading. Elwes (Saw, Princess Bride, Hot Shots) wanders through his role like he's on Prozac, and the film has little real suspense. However, it's not an "awful" movie, it's just been done before and better. |

 | This is actually a frightening movie in many aspects. It starts fairly normal with the protagonist (Nick Elliot) relocating because he has landed a new job. (Good plausible start) He innocently rents a house from some seemingly nice people who have an interesting daughter (Silverstone). While Nick is having his difficulties establishing relations with his new boss (Michael), he does have the luxury of meeting a nice young woman (Amy). (Good) But Nick's situation becomes increasingly difficult as he learns to his surprise that Silverstone (the 14 year old daughter of the people he rents from) has developed a crush on him. While it seems almost innocent at first, Nick learns that this 14 year old girl's obsession with him is approaching very dangerous levels. I don't want to say too much and ruin the movie for you, but there is a great amount of suspense, some much needed comic relief moments, and a horror that you don't find in many other movies. (A realistic terror that requires no blood.) Perhaps the most frightening thing about this movie is that as the viewer, we know that Nick is innocent of what he is accused of; but, we probably won't be too surprised when most of the characters in the story are a lot more ready to believe Silverstone even though she is very dishonest. (The scene where Nick's once difficult boss comes to his aid outlines this quite nicely.) All in all, this is a movie that is worth watching if you like horror and suspense. |

 | When you think of actress Alicia Silverstone's films, you either think of her role in Clueless (really good), or Batman And Robin (really REALLY bad), and you forget that her first couple films barely made any waves at all. Both The Crush and The Babysitter, two years later, fall into the catagory known as "so bad the're good". The Crush puts a younger spin on a premise made famous by 1987's Fatal Attraction.
Ambitious investigative reporter Nick Eliot (Cary Elwes) appears to have it made: he's young, handsome, in love with Amy (Jennifer Rubin), a beautiful photographer and his career is on the rise. To top it off, he's just moved into a fabulous guest house behind a beautiful estate. But Nick's perfect world is set in a tailspin when his landlord Cliff's (Kurtwood Smith) sophisticated teenage daughter, Adrian (Alicia Silverstone), develops an obsessive crush on him and sets out to destroy anyone or anything that gets in her way.
Written and directed by Alan Shapiro, the film allowed for Silverstone to develop her famous pout and her skills at bitting the lower lip. Adrian's dialogue is over the top at times but that's what makes it fun. For his part I don't believe Elwes is acting, as he befuddles his way through the film. Look closely and you might actually see him cursing his agents for sending the project to him in the first place. Fans of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer tv series will notice Amber Benson (Tara) as Cheyenne. As for thrills, there are a few, but at less than 90 minutes, look for them quick or you'll miss 'em. The look of the film is its best asset.
The DVD contains a few slim talent files and some theatrical trailers for other Morgan Creek films, but suprisingly, no trailer for The Crush can be found. I guess Silverstone was too busy to record a commentary about her experiences (wink wink).
The Crush is by no means perfect. But it is a fun guilty pleasure worth a look. |
