 | Having never read the book, this film is a total delight. The subplots mentioned in other reviews brought a more serious flavor than some of Austin's characters such as Emma, great fun though she is. I loved the character Francis O'Conor portrayed and found the storyline more developed than others have been. Mansfield Park, Emma, Sense and Sensibility and most of Persuasion, with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, are most loved in my DVD library. Though others are quite disappointed, this viewer found the film a complete delight from start to finish and eagerly plans to visit Mansfield Park again and again. |

 | I was absolutely disappointed by Frances O'Connor's adaptation of Jane Austen's phenomenol novel: MANSFIELD PARK. Many events in the story as seen in this movie differ from those in the actual novel. The time line is manipulated to make the movie into a more Cinderella style, rather than the dark and more matured original version in the novel. I did, however, like the fact that the movie emphasized on the then political problems such as slavery in Antigua.
Manipulation of Mary Crawford's character in the movie is misleading and hints on a cinderella style of the story, which is far off from the actual novel. Jane Austen has written a simple story of a simple girl, Fanny Price, who is neither tortured or harassed for most of her stay in the Mansfield Estate under the care of Lord Thomas Bertram.
Overall, the movie was made very well (cutting, color, long-short shots of camera work, choice of actors, etc.) but it lacked in substance. The movie should have had more of the younger fanny rather than the older one.
I am looking forward to watching older versions of this movie to see if they have more truth to the story than this one! Do not recommend this 1999 version to anyone who enjoyed the actual novel. |

 | The producers have taken the audience for a ride since this adaptation has not the remotest resemblence to the wonderful creation of Jane Austen. They have just exploited her name for publicity and marketing purposes. Do not waste your time and money watching this version |

 | This movie is not for those of you who just finished reading the novel Mansfield Park and plan to enjoy the movie that was based on the book. I should say LOOSELY based on the book. It is perhaps better if you have not read the book at all. Or if you have low expectations and will not be disappointed in a few, er. . . slight changes in the characters, script, and so forth.
Let us not claim it as a horrbile movie though, it is still enjoyable. Fanny is now a character we can admire, that's positive! She is strong, determined, brave, and witty. This is contrasting greatly with what is written, I know, but I still enjoyed it.
The movie has other pluses such as beautiful scenery, beautiful men, and the discussion of serious issues, such as slavery.
There is alot more in the movie than you think. There is passion, unrequitted love, evil plots, and of course evil characters, illness, rakes, love games, betrayal, adultery, inhertances lost, and inhertances won. So exciting! You might enjoy it so, be fair and open-minded and give it a try.
For those of you who have not read the book this may help
The Scenario:
A mother with too amy mouths to feed decides to send her eldest to live with her rich sister. The little girl is 9 and she expects she is just there for a visit, however, she is there for longer. She takes lessons with her rich cousins, two girls and two boys. When she is older it is time for her cousins to marry. New people in town provide an opportunity for some. The little girl(Fanny) grows up to be good and proper, unlike her female cousins who enjoy flirting scandalously with a certain rake! The rake (Henry Crawford) meanwhile has alreay received the hearts of the two cousins and is out for a third. Fanny won't give him the time of day and he can't understand why. Is it because she is in love with someone else? Who has captured her heart? And does he return her love?
Might I also recommend you purchase the soundtrack, it is brilliant! Great to read by.
